About 2 weeks ago, give or take, I noticed the airbag light was lit in my wife's 2011 Explorer. Since then it's been on every time we drive it.
When you start the car it comes on steady and just stays on, and doesn't flash. I saw elsewhere on a google search that some people said the light went away after they replaced their battery. Has anyone else had a similar issue and was that your fix?
There's a whole lot of diagnostics that are run on the airbag system by the computer every time the vehicle is started. It's considered a life-safety system and as such is constantly being monitored. If the light is on the odds are pretty good that something's wrong. Have the dealer check it out. It could be something as simple as a defective sensor or corroded connector or it could be a bad airbag. I wouldn't ignore it.
Had some weirdness with the airbag light in my wife's 2015 Explorer. When we both were in the vehicle with me driving the light would come on after a few minutes and stay on. The dealer offered to scan it if I could bring it in with the light on. Each time I took the vehicle to go to the dealer the light would be on - but it would go out about halfway to the dealer. It did this three times. Then - and I don't remember exactly why - my wife started putting her gym bag in the back seat instead of the front passenger seat. The light never came on again. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not?
I've had airbag light go on and off periodically. It ended up being a loose or bad connection for the rear seat belt air bags. I cleaned the connections with electrical cleaner and the light went off. Not sure if Ford has a TSB but that worked for me.
So I was driving her explorer the other day and noticed the airbag light was no longer on, I asked her about it and she said she noticed it was gone a week or so ago. So I'm guessing it's probably a connection issue like you guys had.
