What motor do you have? And what year is the motor? And how much do you want to spend? And do you want a stock column shift or is a floor shift ok? Can you fabricate and modify things like shift linkages and cables?
I have the 170. I would like a column shift and have no idea if this is the original engine or not. How much do I want to spend? I am thinking a transmission and I was going to have Vic rebuild my manual column shift to an automatic column.
$1000 on transmission plus whatever Vic charges
Best I can figure is a '63 would have had a Ford-o-matic, the '64 up the C4 transmission. The C4 would be the way to go. You will need to find a C4 transmission, flexplate and starter that will work with your 170. Since the 170 was around for a few more years, you may be able to find the entire setup if you can find intact cars from that era in a scrap yard. The C4 has a separate bell, so keep that in mind and if you found a small six auto trans bell from '64 and up that would be something to grab.
Not sure about driveshaft or cross member, but those are easy once you get the main hardware lined up. Shifter and kickdown linkage would be all or partial fabrication. There are schematics and adjustment diagrams on the internet once you get closer to that part of the swap
Ok, I appreciate all the information and maybe a manual shift isn’t so bad after all lol!
if it wasn’t such a big project I may have made the change but having a manual shifter that works properly will make driving much more pleasant. That said, how much do you charge to rebuild the manual column and how long can I expect it to take?
