Hey guys
I got a 67 F250 4x4 recently and I'm working through all the systems to see what's good and what needs work. The t case seems to work, but there are no indents for the various positions. It seems that you have to know where the different settings are located. Is that normal operation? Thanks.
No probably not normal. On mine I have to give the shift lever a bit of a bump to get it moving and there definite stops for each gear/range. Its not a smooth piece of machinery for sure....more of a tractor part. but you should be able to feel the detents.
There are two shift rods going in to the front of the transfer case, inside the case there are ball bearings and rods that fall in to grooves in the two shift rods. That is what defines the shift pattern. Its pretty involved to get in there..... Probably check the linkage and shift lever first make sue nothing is binding. Then maybe live with it until you rebuild the t case someday.
If the linkage checks out make sure the two hex head bolts that retain the spring and detent ball for the shift rods are present on the case in valley area between the case to frame mounts. If they are not then that would cause the shift lever to feel like there is not a positive location for each drive mode. This would also cause it to want to come out of gear and go into neutral. If they are there then take them out and make sure the spring and detent ball are still in there and the spring is not broke. Other than whats been mentioned you will have to dive into the case to see what else is going on. Not super difficult to do but if you find something internal that is bad your going to be in troubleand may have to call it a day on that case.
As willoybilly3 has said you can still get the seals and bearings, which I did to rebuild my D24 before finding a divorced 205 to replace it. Other than that the only other thing you can get is an adjustable detent bolt and spring set up that is after market.
