Help, I bought a 7.3l IDI

So, I am in Dallas, TX today and I bought a 7.3l with a Banks turbo. It has all of the accessories (PS pump, AC compressor, etc.).

Tomorrow I will lift it out of my dad's truck and set it on a tire in my shop. How do I lift it? I have a cherry picker with a load leveler. I though I could remove all the accessories and wrap a tow strap around it. I don't know if that would damage the valve covers and oil cooler though. There are no obvious lift points on the engine.

I used my lift to move a 600-700 lbs. Oldsmobile engine before but I bet this weighs closer to 1000-1100 lbs. Any advice is appreciated. Pics to come.

Personally I've never pulled out one of these engines, but I have noticed some loop points on the intake manifold, and I think you're supposed to lift from those. But they might be hidden by the turbo, depending on the model

this is for a 6.9 but I bet the 7.3 is the same
at the 5 min mark you can see the loop points,

Every IDI I've seen had factory lift points bolted to the intake, 3 or 4. Failing that you can always use the bosses in the front or rear of the cylinder heads to bolt a chain to it and lift like any other engine.

I have a van, and I've pulled a 6.9 and a 7.3. Both had lift hoops previously installed on the intake.

I used a 2-ton shop crane (don't use a cheapo or a 1-ton crane. These IDI's are heavy AF.

Even though my process was a little different in the van, it's definitely easier to pull the block out of the truck.
Regardless, here is the photo shoot from my 7.3 extraction: 7.3 to 6.9 Swap in a E250 Clubwagon Van (with photos) ? IDI Online
Here is the 6.9: Pulling a 6.9 IDI Engine from a 1984 E350 Econoline Van ? IDI Online

If you don't have the lift hoops, you can find them on Craigslist or Ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/92-93-94-FO...paZlQ1&vxp=mtr

Thanks for the pointers. I will have to look closer at the engine once I am back in OKC. If I have to I can always buy extra hardware to secure the chains to the heads. My hoist is rated at 2 tons so I think I have plenty of wiggle room. I will keep everyone posted.

unfortunately part of the banks turbo install is removal of the factory engine lift points.
you are correct on the weight, plan on 1100 lbs for a complete 7.3 IDI engine

what i would do is find a few unused bolt holes in the heads front and rear, and get grade 8 bolts to screw into them to connect a lift chain to.

Chronic IDI Addiction is a real problem. Every day, IDI owners are tempted with the purchase of a second, third, and even in extreme cases, a fourth IDI. Most are helpless to the temptation.
Do your part to stop IDI Addiction where it starts. Contributing just one dollar a day to me, you can help keep an IDI Owner from hitting rock bottom. This is the stage in the disease where they spend endless hours nightly scouring ebay for mounting hoops and what they call "great deals." The problem is, they are never "great deals." They are just excuses for more useless parts. These people need our help. Stop IDI Addiction. Race for the Cure!

That's some funny stuff!

I got the engine onto a tire on my shop floor. I had to disassemble the intake side of the turbo and I had just enough room to clear the injector lines when I bolted the hoist to the lift points.

I was told that the engine was no good but it definitely looks like it was rebuilt or at least painted in the past. At the very least I will have to install head studs before I replace my 6.9l, so I should be able to assess the condition of the engine.

The engine supposedly came from a 92 f350 with a ZF5. I think I am missing a few turbo parts and engine parts (fuel filter header, flexplate and auto tranny turbo parts). The price was right though. $500 + $150 for a core if I want to return my 6.9l. Oh yeah...

Here are some pics.

I hear ya, Iam looking every night on CL, looking in yards as I drive around the roads out here, check www.row52.com, PNP etc... might be picking up
another 6.9 and 5 spd. IDK.
Just picked up a 85 300TD Mercedes wagon on Friday for $400, ya I have that addiction too. 7 MB`s and only 2 IDI`s ....so far.

My 1nd addiction was TDI's. It was like pot. It was the gateway drug to harder drugs like IDI's. When I first got into it, I thought, what's the harm. I'm already smoke a TDI every once in a while, why not inject a IDI Clubwagon.

Fast forward a few years later, I have spare IDI blocks strewn about the garage, boxes labeled like "Various Stock IDI Diesel Filter Heads," and I constantly search craigslist for my next fix. I know it's affecting my personal life and family life, but I haven't hit rock bottom yet. Maybe my 5th engine will be the moment when my friends and family step in with an intervention. ugh. I'm not looking forward to the day when they say stuff like, "We love you. Your addiction to Oil Coolers is hurting our relationship!"

That's a pretty decent price since it includes most of the turbo kit. Did the PO mention why the engine was shot?

I bought it from Eagle Mountain Auto Salvage in Fort Worth, TX. I didn't see the truck it came out of because the engine was on a wooden pallet in a warehouse. However, the folks at the salvage yard said the truck had been wrecked. The engine was covered in bits of windshield glass.

When I removed the oil filter there wasn't any glitter in the oil. When I finally get the rest of the turbo I will remove the heads to install head studs. If all goes well, it might only need gaskets and paint. Of course, it could need a full rebuild too. Either way I think I got a good deal. I need to get a good engine stand for it before I disassemble it though.
