on my friends 1988 f150 lariat 302. One day it was running fine and he went on a trip about 35 miles away. All of a sudden it began stuttering and got so it would not go at all. The engine never died and it would idle ok. He was way out in the country waiting for me to come. He just shut it off and quit trying. He waited for about a half hour and decided to try to go again. It started right up and it got him to a gas station where he added gas. It showed about a 1/4 tank and he filled up.
He completed his trip with no problems, pulling a heavy load of lumber.. Two weeks later, it did it again. He had a gas can with him and he poured it in. He said the gas was about a 1/4 of a tank. It did fine. Yesterday, we were driving along fine. and it started it again. would not pull but would catch back up and idle fine. He had a little gas and poured it in. It was doing ok from there on.
H attributes it to getting down to near a 1/4 tank. I don't know.
It is a hose that runs between the pump and the tube going up.
Yes it is inside the tank.
Look close the brake in the hose in the photo is right under the wires for the pump.
It ran with the same problem as the OP has.
Da_Lariat_Chariot,
Your 91 does not have that set up.

Yep, I've got modules instead. 😁 I don't know much about the systems older than mine
It is a dual tank truck. I thank you very much for your help. Is it the rubber coupling right after the pump?
Do you fix it by replacing the rubber coupling or do we need to replace the whole sending unit pump assembly. Would it simplify things if he just converted to one tank.
Yes it is the rubber coupling right after the pump I was speaking of.
Now does it do it on the other tank also as this would only effect it while running on the tank with the bad rubber coupling.
