Got a 2001 f150 5 speed 4.6 with a borg-warner 4406 transfer case no matter what drive I'm in or if the tcase is in neutral it has a grinding sound coming from it power steering pump is a part timer but when it does work the grinding becomes louder any thoughts on this?
Might be the throw-out bearing for the clutch?? might be other things too?? Sound has a way of traveling making it seem like its coming from one area only to be another culprit. I would get a mechanics stethoscope and try to isolate where its is coming from.
Try this... take the serpentine belt off and start it....If the sound is gone , it then is something on the belt drive system. If it is reduced, you may have multiple issues. It might then be come easier to zero in on what is making the noise. It could still be the T-case or it might be the flywheel ....or just a heat shield rattling...
