Ok here's the story...I went to The Atlanta Airport yesterday. left town for the night for family stuff came back this morning and I had absolutley no electrial at all. Couldn't use the power lock roll down the window or turn on the cab lights...NOTHING.got the parking lot security guy to give me a jump and I dorve 150 miles back to Auburn. The whole ride I was expecting the truck to die cause I thought it was the alternator or something shorted but nothing happened. I have and optima red top so i really don't think it would have died and there was nothing left on. What the heck happened why was my battery dead should I be worried?
some other ailments i noticed on the dirve was a funny smell. not exhaust fumes but an odd smell that seemed to kick in when i would kick the engine in to the 3000rpm range... no lack of performace or anything like that just a smell...I just replaced the exhaust the y-pipe back is it just heating up or something?
Probably a relay is stuck and causing a constant drain on your battery. Place an ammeter (amp meter) in series with your positive battery cable. With no load, your current draw should be significantly less than 1 amp. Anything else indicates a problem.
Pull your fuses one at a time and watch the amps to find the culprit circuit. When you're done with the fuses you should start pulling relays in the same manner.
Your suspicious smell is likely from your new exhaust. Whcih exhaust did you get? I'm thinking about replacing mine. I want increased performance without a lot of noise -- I guess I'm getting old! How do you like yours?
Thanks for the suggestion about the relays...could that eventually kill my battery permently? that would not be good.
About a month ago I put on the Bassani Y-pipe with one high flow cat. I had it just dumped out at the end of the pipe after the cat. Then last week I had a 5x8x18 Magnaflow installed, mainly becasue I couldn't here myself think when I drove around and I wanted to open the rear window again. I like the setup a lot, so far, its almost completely inaudible in the cab while cruising and it gives a very soft low drone inside while accelerating haven't had anyone do a pass in front of me so I could hear it from the outside though. I plan on getting Bassani sortie headers as well. and a bunch of other engine stuff like intake manifold and cams etc etc... so I think it will work just right.
sorry to jump in here, but i am curious too about this. to wire an amp meter in series. you would just the the amp meter to 20A AC and touch it to the posts of the battery?
Yea there was a little squeak coming from the front of the engine bay i couldn't pin-point it...what does it mean? I thought it might have been the fan but now you got me nervous. but I think the squeak has been there for a while (I think) and the smell has just now started and by the way the AC really smelled when I turned it on. so i didn't use it. if that means anything
Well I put the amp meter up to the battery and found out that my amp meter is a piece of crap. I think I might just go to Auto Zone and see if they can do thier free check.

No. That would be parallel. You have to remove a cable and put the meter between the cable and the battery.
i have to agree with a relay sticking and my guess is the fuel pump relay. this happened to me . i would definatly have the charging system checked out though.
I am gonna let the truck sit over night and see if it drains itself again...if it does I am gonna start with the system check then go to the relays from there. You guys have been a lot of help thanks a bunch.

If it was a relay sticking, it will probaly happen again and again until it is always stuck on. This happened with my starter relay last year. But I didn't understand the warrning signs (thought it was a low battery) and I burnt out my starter when the relay finnaly welded itself closed.
I have a smell which started just after the Bassani Y-pipe and headers were installed. I only smell it when I range it from 2500-3500 on the accelerate. I did tighten H bolts after 300, have put additional 500 on but the smell is an odd combo of exhaust/burn/i don't know. what I also noticed a new smell 2 years ago immediately after I installed the Gibson exhaust. That smell was different but definately a "new" smell. I will retighten the bolts and see if that makes any difference.
