'95 transmission problem

We have a 1995 F-150 4x4 with automatic transmission, model 4R70W (AODE). My son just drove it home, and on the way it started slipping. When we checked under the vehicle, all the ATF had blown out from somewhere, and was all over the underside. With just a visual inspection, we could not determine where it got out. Any ideas, and if so do you think there will be damage? Is it something we may be able to fix ourselves? Have not done anything with it, as no garage will be able to look at it for several days. Thanks, CT

It probably came out your vent valve somewhere around the top of the bellhousing. It's not a good sign and probably means your fluid is not flowing properly inside the case or is overheating badly. I wouldn't recommend messing with it yourself. I'd ask around and find a reputable tranny shop. Good luck, Ben

For whatever it is worth, I had a similar problem with my '95 F150 4X4, 5.0 Litre. At 19K miles, the tranny, an AOD, began slipping. I pulled the dipstick and nothing registered. I added two quarts and it worked OK for a few days and began slipping again. No external leaks were evident. The dealer found a blown seal between the transfer case and transmission. The tranny fluid kept migrating to the transfer case. The dealer replaced the seal, but couldn't explain why it failed (now doesn't that sound like a Ford dealer?)nor did they care.At 33K miles guess what happened? Yep. Tranny slipping, fluid level low and no leaks. Dealer pulled the tranny the second time and replaced the same seal AGAIN!!!! No explanation as to why it failed. Their quality care was to nurse me out of warranty before it happened again. It now has 60K miles and I again wait for the big one. So does my lawyer since that will be my first stop.

Good luck!
