Greetings!
In my F6 I replaced the vacuum hose that goes to the brake booster with 1/2"ID emissions hose. That's what the local NAPA store said would work.
I have noticed that this hose collapses under vacuum. Is there another choice? Something more rigid? I really don't want to try and run tubing unless as a last resort.
This hose also collapses in short runs too, anything over 6".
I found that hose impossible to get. Even the local Gates distributor couldn't get it. But please let me know if you find it somewhere. I wound up using the Harbor Freight 1/2" air hose for short coupling runs. Seems to work ok since the walls are rated for 250 psig, and it's pretty rigid.
Not surprised the local kid didn't recommend it. They always ask "what's it for?" then I get the "I can't look that up, it's too old."
I always have that problem. They think "If it ain't in the computer, it doesn't exist". But the one that gets under my skin is that they don't understand that not every component is proprietary. There are an awful lot of parts used that are common to just about all vehicles. Only a definitive cross reference has that knowledge and it's usually stored inside an over 60 gearhead's mind.
Yeah, that was part of my problem. I only wanted six feet. But at the time it was totally OOS everywhere. That's what the Gates rep told me.
I thought about that other hose too. But when I looked at it, it was only one ply and pretty squishy. Don't understand how it's rated for vacuum.
I am using silicone hose for my vacuum runs. My pump pulls between 22 and 24 inches of vacuum and so far no collapse of the hose. Silicone is very durable and impervious to temperature extremes and chemicals. I chose blue to match my paint but there are other colors available.
I didn't think of the braided air hose.
While they use nylon for the runs on the frame and axles you still need a rubber product that for steering and from the frame to the axles.

I am a huge fan of silicone, used it on the heater and upper and lower radiator hoses. I am not sure how it would work on a long run for vacuum 6' and longer. Unless it is a different product with some support within the walls.
