how to negotiate

First I'm going to buy a new super duty soon. I'm wondering I see a 2017 brand new 350 Lariat SW long bed with lots of expensive options for $71,100 MSRP then a $ dealer discount $ 8,9000.00 then $1000 ford discount then $1250 Ford credit $500 discount first responder discount $200 coupon so I end up at $60,100. So does anyone think this is the starting point on a 2017 and I need to hammer them down from here or do you thinks this is about as good a deal as its going to get? It as supplemental heater ,ultimate tow Package$1900 18" chrome wheels Chrome 5th wheel prep snow plow pep bed step bed liner and a bunch of other stuff. I don't have a trailer and not planning on getting one I'm never going to plow snow either but I do think the Adaptive steering sounds cool, it also has adaptive cruise control and blind spot stuff. Please help on what to pay besides saying least as possible.

Gasser or diesel? Does it have the dual panel moon roof? Voice navigation? What state do you live in? $60K for a 2017 fully loaded Lariat SRW diesel in Fairbanks, Alaska would be a pretty good deal.

First off I meant to say Chrome Package and 5th wheel prep. I also wanted to add, I've never bought a new Veh. before ever and I'm almost 60y/o. The options on this truck are TWICE as much as I 've ever spent on a Veh. in my life so bottom line its making me a little nervous. I have a 2000 super duty 259 crewcab long bed now 5.4 220,000 miles and still runs fine no leaks shifts good has served me well buts its rusting out. So any sincere help would be appreciated.

I think adaptive cruise is pretty cool & the collision warning is a nice feature to have. When I ordered my ‘18 there wasn’t much info on how the collision system worked. I felt it implied that it only worked with cruise control on. It doesn’t however. Really like having it.

It's a diesel it has Navigation no moon roof and its in Idaho and I'm in Memphis. I found a F-350 in Houston that is the tri color white camel interior with Nav. and moonroof its around $71,000MSRP for $61,000 it doesn't have the prep packages that I don't need but I dont like the wheels and has no chrome Package and the dealership has terrible reviews its Mac Haik. They sell alot of trucks though.

Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those, I think $60K for that rig is a pretty good deal. YMMV. Good luck!

When I bought, it was employee pricing time and all the incentives where rolling. After the dust settled I got a touch over 15 percent off the full MSRP including the destination and delivery. My truck is was similar to what you are looking at Lariat Ultimate, diesel but a long box (which is what I wanted). I lam in a similar situation I am 57 and have only purchased one new vehicle in my life, in my 20's (although me wife has had a few new trucks :-) so I was having heart palpitations over buying this one, it is a lot of cash for a truck. I looked at the deal backwards, forwards and upside down, I considered everything from base trucks up to Lariat. In the end I ordered a fairly base Lariat as I wanted leather and a couple other things I couldn't get on an XLT (adaptive steering being another one) And then ... the dealer didn't execute the order correctly and the truck arrived missing a few key options I wanted, one of them being the console, so I refused the truck.

I needed a truck at that point badly for work, they made me a good deal on a loaded truck (at least loaded to me) and that is I how I ended up with this Lariat.I am in Canada and there is a difference in the dollar, so I think it is easier to talk discount. I think once you hit 15 percent you are pretty close to the bottom. They gave me a full tank of gas (which is a couple hundred bucks with the larger tank that comes with the long box) Maybe if I pushed harder I might have gotten some floor mats or a free oil change but they had to bring this truck in from another dealer so their wasn't much of a holdback for the dealer to play with.

As far as the truck goes, this is way more of an optioned truck than I have ever owned. The items I probably wouldn't miss and didn't order on my initial truck are: lane departure, rain sensitive wipers, auto high beams and the factory Nav which I rarely use. I had ordered the camera package and bliss but the truck I received didn't have those options however the mirrors are so good that with the back up camera I don't think I really need any more cameras or the blind spot as there really isn't one. Although I wouldn't have (and didn't) order many of the options I got on the vehicle, I use and enjoy almost every feature on the truck. I like you may not have needed the diesel but I very much enjoy the diesel.

You live in a cool climate so make sure and discuss the door locks that freeze up in the winter. that has been a problem I and others in cold climates have had and it is a pain although I don't know that they have really fully resolved it. My other issue was sunroof drains that weren't connected correctly but that was fixed in one visit and you aren't like getting a sunroof so know worries there (another option I didn't plan on but really like). Good luck on your truck, it is really an amazing vehicle.

It doesn't sound like it's a Lariat Ultimate which can get you the LED headlights as an option I believe. I paid around $66k for mine but it was a Lariat Ultimate with a couple extra options like the LED head lights and the power steps.

It's not a bad deal. If you can't find exactly what you want then put in an order from the factory.

Everyone has done this, so everyone has an opinion on how to do it. It’s all relevant so just go in as educated as you can. Here are my perspectives:

1: Educate yourself and do your homework. Research dealer websites and note how much their offer price differs from MSRP. Look only at the model you are interested in. In other words, don’t compare car discounts with F250 discounts. Most will be around 6-percent off MSRP. They try to stay competitive with one another so you aren’t likely to find a particular dealer offering a screaming deal below MSRP, otherwise they’d put the other dealers out of business.

2: Sort out incentives and know for sure what is available. Hit the Ford website and poke around to flush out everything you may be able to take advantage of.

3: Don’t buy today unless you absolutely have to get the truck today. If you go in with a commitment to yourself that you are testing waters and will come back tomorrow or maybe next week, you help to remove the emotional component from purchase consideration. Make sure the sales person knows this. Even if they are offering what seems a screaming deal, do it tomorrow or later.

4: Communication is key. You be very clear. Do not use ambiguous language. Anything subject to interpretation means it will come out in the dealer’s favor. If the sales person uses ambiguous language, make them clarify precisely what they are saying. This is a discipline. If there is more than one interpretation, you will arrive at the wrong interpretation. Force yourself to judge every single word for differing meanings to make sure you and the sales person have absolute understanding of what you are saying and what they are saying. They will purposely use ambiguous language to move the deal in their favor.

5: He who cares the least has the most power. You are at the dealer by choice. You don’t have to make a deal. You have to be willing to walk away if you feel they are trying to rope you into a deal you really don’t want. The sales person needs to know you are there by choice and will leave by choice, so it’s in their best interest to make the visit worth your while.

6: Don’t bring anyone with you when you negotiate. You will have enough of a challenge controlling your emotions. You can’t be distracted by three-way conversations or trying to control the emotions of another person.

7: Don’t settle. If it’s not what you want, then tell the sales person it’s not working. If you absolutely must have a particular configuration, then tell them they’re not showing you what you asked for. The sales person would like to match you to what they have on the lot and try to avoid dealer swaps or special ordering. But remember this; you’re the customer and you get to decide what you want.

And that’s about it for me. There are probably some blanks that can be filled in by others.

Long distance deal?

First, I wouldn't buy anything until I was personally able to inspect, drive it. Second, I wouldn't travel to inspect it until I had the deal in writing.

Speaking from experience here. Don't make the mistake I did. I traveled to buy a car once and the car wasn't exactly what they said it was over the phone, and they tried to fudge on the deal we verbally agreed to. My mistake was that I didn't walk. I still have the car, and it's been fine, but they did jerk me around, and it still bugs me today, 15 years later.

Second, have your financing in hand before you walk in the dealer. Commonly dealers will low ball themselves on the purchase price, and get it back on the finance end. Again, especially if you travel far.

Third, remember that that '17 will now be 2 model years old when you drive it off the lot. The depreciation hit you'll take won't be a big deal if you plan to keep the truck for a long time (eg - 10 years), but will be a bigger hit if you plan to sell/trade in a few years.

Personally, if I can't find something locally, I'd try to be patient and wait until I could find it locally, or pay a little more and order exactly what you want. There are ways to get a good deal by ordering (although maybe not as good a deal as an older model sitting on a lot somewhere).

I used to write software for car dealerships. I worked a lot with the sales guys. There was a sales trainer that came around to the dealerships. He knew psychology to his advantage. He knew when a customer wasn't telling the truth. It was a science to him. The dealerships paid him a good fee to come in to teach the sales force because they knew they could get better margins. When dealing with a trained salesman it's to your advantage to deal with them on the phone. But most experienced salesmen want you right there in front of them. It's easier to hang up the phone than it is to walk away.
