E-450 V10 or V8

Hi, new to the site. Just purchased a 2006 E-450 Fleetwood Class C RV. The 8th Vin digit on websites I checked says it has a V8. We opened the doghouse and counted 5 ignition coils on each side. That would mean a V10.

This is a one owner vehicle so I know the motor was not swapped......

Any thoughts on why the mis-match?

Thanks Mike

The eighth digit of the VIN will either be an 'L' , 'P' or an 'S'. If it's 'L' it'll be the 5.4L V8. If it's 'S' it'll be the 6.8L V10. If it's a 'P' it'll be the 6.0L diesel V8.

Odd - it is the number 5 on my VIN not a letter. On the chart I found a 5 was a V8. But I counted 5 ignition coils on each side.

"S" may look like a "5" ??

You know what - I was looking at my paperwork and not the actual VIN plate. I will check the vehicle. Could very well be an S and not a 5. Thanks for that.....

Of course if they have the VIN wrong on my paperwork - that's a different tissue LOL...

A VIN code of '5' would be a 5.4L 3-valve V8 which has never been offered in the E-Series vans.

Well THANK YOU ALL. I looked a the actual VIN number on the door and that is an S. (should have looked there first) So it is a V10.

Now I have to see why Camping World has a 5 on my insurance and probably the license. We shall see

Great forum - quick answers - so glad I joined.

Ummm.....it would be very wise to have this information corrected sooner than later if they are present on any government documentation.

This is the perfect example of why there are no letters 'I' or 'O' in any VIN of any make of vehicle. Only numbers '1' and '0' to avoid any confusion.

Side Note.... The Ford V10 is THE largest gas engine available in a mass produced vehicle. I had it in a Class C MH, then traded it for a Diesel Pusher.
The V10 is a powerful motor and eats gas too. The Class C Motorhome would scream going up hills. I thought the engine was going to come out through the floor board.

Mike, welcome to FTE. Another site you'll want to check out is rv.net and join the Class C forum. Lots of know-how there too on camping related things etc.
