1979 Ford F250 long bed. 460 big block, c-6 trans,. been doing lots of things to new to me truck and next is exaust leak noticed during sea foam flush. It was where donut should be if it has one. I tried earlier today and got bolt and nut off then nut on other side after a bit of work, liquid wrench, heat, wire brush, and a whole lot of back and forth. Well because of connect to other manifold could not move it enough to even tell for sure if it had a donut. The Napa guys could not tell me as their computer did not show it but gave me the most common one. I need to take other side off tomorrow unless told there is no donut. if donuts are there I need to get another one since I will be loosening it anyway and new bolts and nuts as passenger side looked worse than one I did. Just another gotta do so do it right. I know there's a purr under all the noise.
I believe there is sometimes a nut on a threaded stud that is threaded in the exhaust manifold??? You do NOT want to strip or break that stud. If you have to use a nut cutter to get the nut off, then do that. And then clean/run a die (to clean the stud threads), or run a tap to clean/chase the hole, since you have a bolt. Then go with a new nut or bolt.
As far as how to seal the exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold...once it is removed and you can clean both mating surfaces and right before you reconnect and tighten, use a bit of high temp gasket material at the point where they touch.
