2009 FX4 w/125k
Decided to take a peek under the front and saw a bunch of grease around the right inner axle boot. Found a hole near the edge of the band holding the boot on and was able to fix it with a hose clamp. Based on the amount of grease I cleaned up I'm guessing about 1/2 or more is gone.
Should I be trying to get more grease in that boot or with 125k miles on this guy should I just wait and do a new axle?
Unfortunately if the grease is coming out, water and dirt is probably getting in. You may be able to have the shafts re-booted but by the time you factor in the labor it wouldn't make sense not to just replace the whole shaft. Do some homework because I've read that some aftermarket replacements ( I think it was Dorman) have inferior joints that don't have a proper range of motion and will bind and pop at higher angles.
