Installed the OEM version yesterday. Easy install, did not remove tailgate completely. Removed from mounts, and supported by barrels with rugs on top. Lower ball stud was easy once started in hole, used a gearwrench to fasten it. I like it, since no tailgate slams anymore. Forewarned though, from the unintended consequence department, it opens slowly , too slowly if you are carrying a load , and anxious to dump it in the bed! So . open prior to loading up!!
From info on one of the forums I ordered the following- Genuine Ford Tailgate OEM Shock Damper Kit - Ford F-150 2015-2018 FL3Z99406A10A
The user said that it also fit the 2018 F250 Super Duty - the above kit doesn't have the Ball-Nut (W713029S439SUB)
Rather then send the kit back I was wondering if I could use the piston and purchase a Ball-Nut and complete the installation or is the piston a different length or strength that wouldn't carry the weight of the F250 SD tailgate.
So my questions are:
Is the piston the same one that is used in the HC3Z-99406A10-A ?
Where can I purchase the Ball-Nut that threads into the washer on the chassis? On a YouTube video it clearly shows the Ball-Nut coming out of a OEM Ford bag with the part number clearly on it. (W713029S439SUB) but yet I haven't found it online.
Here are the images from what I purchased.
You would want to pick up some paint and clear coat or send it off to a body shop to match your truck. The part is painted black. I picked up 2 cans from a local auto shop and did it myself.
Fairway Ford has some listed on ebay for $69.89 shipped. I had mine in 2 days. Simple install. I went with the factory setup because it is hidden. I have purchased quite a few items from them. Some directly, some online. Always arrived quickly for me so sometime a couple bucks more is ok if I know I will have it fairly quick. They may price match. Good luck.
$65 shipped from "portsmouthford" (ebay) for the Ford unit
I've had the DeeZee on my Ram for a couple years, and it has been great. I bought it because I have some friends who are rather rough with tailgates. The guys on the Ram forums kept complaining that the tailgate was "too heavy"
