ok i have a 89 f150 4x4 302efi 4speed stick and it just started messing up like ucan be driving down the road at 55 and all of a sudden it will loose speed act up and u can see all the black smoke come out the exhaust and actually watch the gas gauge move. it will do this for about a 1/2-1 mile and clear up then do it again. now i have no idea what the prob could be and help would be great. this is what i have done to the truck so far, new o2 sensor, checked egr, checked iac vavle, cleaned throttlebody and none of this has helped so i am at a loss. so if anyone could help i would be much greatful thank u
Sounds like too much oil to me. It's getting up into the combustion chamber and burning away. The excess of oil screws with the combustion (kills it, really) and that is why you get the sudden loss of power. The oil then burns and releases the smoke you're seeing. The problem goes away as all the oil is burned away and it runs fine until the next delivery of oil arrives.
My go-kart, while significantly different, does the SAME exact thing when I overfill it...as should any vehicle.
In short, check your oil. If that isn't the problem, maybe bad rings on the piston, if not THAT, then I can't help you. :-(
I thought excessive fuel was black smoke, oil was blue-grey, water/coolant was white.
One thing you can do is pull the plugs right after it acts up and smell them. There should be plenty of residue left on them to ID the type of fluid.

Sounds like defective of dirty injectors to me. If the smoke is black, most likely it is fuel, not oil. Also, you indicated that the fuel gauge moves in concert with the problem.
I would buy some Techron Fuel system cleaner and run it in about a half tank of fuel. Has done wonders for me.
Maybe a loose connection to the in-tank fuel pump? If gauge drops same time fuel system does, maybe a power loss or something.

i would have the fuel pressure regulator checked. it has 3 screws holdng it to the fuel rail, toward the back of the engine. has a vacuum hose on it. a new one is about $40. has a diaphram, and check valve/seat. it controls the amount of fuel pressure going to the injectors.
