ALERT!!

I have a 1990 F250HD4x4 w/ Dana50 front TTB.
I was under it checking everything out tonight and noticed something awfully sickening. Both the passenger and drive side TTB brackets to the engine crossmember had Extremely loose bolt some had backed out half the length and one bolt was sheered off and the bracket sitting down 1/2 and inch, AND I JUST GOT BACK FROM A TRIP TO COLORADO.
This is VERY scary to think what would have happened if they would have let go.
This truck has never been abused and I have been driving the truck since it was new although just have owned it for 4 months now.
Also the motor mount bolts were it goes onto the block/ one on the passenger side was missing.
All this seems very strange too me and am considering going to Ford and talking this over with them because if there ever was a safety recall this WOULD be it for sure.

Also because I cannot get the bolt out of the front ttb arm because the other one is missing can someone please tell me if they know what bolts were used looks like they were just 2 or 21/2 inches long but what size were they and what thread also are they grade 8??

thanks,
Joel Thomas

I can't tell you what size, but Definatly GO WITH GRADE 8, you should also be sure to use lock washers and/or nuts.
Good luck fixing it.

ALERT!!

Been there and done that. My truck is a 92' F-250. I noticed the bolts being loose when I last changed the oil. No bolts were missing but the looseness of them did bring up major concirn. Oil residue from parts of the engine weeping and normal vibration I feel may have contributed to my problem. All bolts looked intact so I just tightened them up. First, I cleaned all of the oil off of them and the frame. Brake cleaner worked wounders for this. Then, I lock-tited and hossed down on all of the bolts. That was approx 8 months ago and everything still seems OK. I would use grade eight bolts for replacement. I would not even entertain using standard bolts in this application. Good luck. Jake.

FYI, those are the brackets where the Dana 44 and Dana 50 front drive axles pivot from. The left traction beam's pivot is on the right, and the right traction beam's pivot point is on the left. Each pivot bushing is mounted in a bracket, which is mounted to the crossmember with bolts.

Sorry but Grade 8's have a lower shear rating than 5's. The tensile strength is greater but if I remember you want the greatest shear resistance. Still use the lock washer or nuts like he said though.

Wrong!!! Grade 8 bolts will have higher shear strengths over Grade 5 bolts anytime. Here's a quote from Fastenal's tech reference guide-

"When no shear strength is given for common carbon steels with hardness up to 40 HRC, 60 % of
their ultimate tensile strength is often used once given a suitable safety factor. This should only be used as
an estimation."

Minimum tensile strength for a grade 5 bolt is 120,000 psi and min tensile strength for a grade 8 bolt is 150,000 psi.

Tons of specs can be found at-
