My wife's 1990 F-150 4x4 V6 XLT/Lariat has an intermittent engine problem, that I'm pretty sure is the ECU. It "stutters" as if the ignition or fuel is cutting off. My understanding of the control system is that if the ECU fails to trigger a spark, the ignition module will do it anyway, although late. There doesn't seem to be a failsafe for lack of fuel triggers. When it's failing, I can just momentarily turn off the ignition, and the problem goes away. It only occurs as between "slightly warm" and "normal run temperature". Once it reaches temp, a quick reboot fixes the problem for the rest of the use. There are no check lights or stored codes using an ODB1 reader. I'm thinking that if the ECU boots while the starter is lowering the 12v, it mis-configures or something.
The problem is that my ECU is not marked with a part number. It is stamped "remanufactured CC 06155175 P". I've been told that could have been at the factory. Anyway, my Calibration Code is 0-61E-R02. I can provide the VIN if that's needed as well. I've looked at the Motorcraft quick guides, googled, all for naught.
