Diagnosing new E-4OD problem
Just today, I noticed transmission was slipping when going into 2nd. With mild acceleration, it is not noticeable at all but does present when I accelerate a little harder.
The first shop I consulted today checked with his computer and determined it was not throwing any codes. He returned from his test drive saying it had a problem with 2nd gear and the trans needed to be rebuilt. Quoted $1800 for the rebuild and either $500 or $800 for the converter. He claimed the $800 was better for towing and would also yield better mileage. This shop is one of the most respected in area.
The next shop, also well thought of, just test drove it and returned saying it was a case of old age. There was accelerated wear, but he wouldn't say it had to be rebuilt. If I wanted it rebuilt, he quoted $1200-$2200, including the converter, which he claims are custom built to the job by a local individual.
I don't want to drive it until it self destructs.
I don't want to pay for a rebuild if a specific repair would fix it.
And most important, I don't want it to puke in the deer woods.
Suggestions, please.
Jim
With no repair ideas submitted to my post here a few weeks ago, I figure it's just old-age and I'll drive it until it won't go- then rebuild it.
If you find a non-rebuild solution to the problem, I sure would appreciate it if you post the info here on the board.
In electronic controlled trannys, problems related to engine sensors can also produce erratic response from engine and/or tranny wich can produce also slipage.
In my experience the best is dissasembly tranny and perform a full diagnostic on all internall parts. After reapir, pressures should return to normal, if this doesn't happend there is a problem external to tranny wich is causing low pressures and slipage.
