My 300 has a new warm up knock that has progressively gotten worse over the past few weeks. it knocks only when the engine is cold. Is this by any chance a stuck lifter, oil circulation issue, rockers loose? it sounds as if the sound is coming from the cam/lifter area or around the pushrod cover. It only knocks in drive with my foot on the gas and creating a little torque on the engine. It has 150,000 miles on it and has been running 5w-40 oil from the day it was purchased. after the engine has slightly warmed up the knock is gone completely.
so i know this is a year old thread of mine but the sound is back and a little worse. let me restate the problem, i start the truck just fine no problems running fine, no sounds or anything. i drive up to the road and start accelerating with the engine cold, not fast just normal acceleration maybe up to 35 mph, as i let off the gas i get a TAT! TAT! TAT! TAT!TAT! TAT! TAT! and i let off the gas completely and it goes away. so i come to a stop with one foot on brake one on gas and once rpms are at 1500ish TAT! TAT! TAT! TAT! TAT! i had my father work the brake and gas while i put the ole stethoscope to the engine and it souds as if its coming from the back of the heads/push-rod cover. hard to tell. once the engine is completely warm there is no tapping at any time. should i take tis to a mechanic to get the heads pulled and adjusted/replaced/looked at? or should i try a few things before i resort to a mechanic. i can do alot myself but heads and adjusting valves arent something i know alot about. any advise is welcome im at a loss, i have added a lucas oil additive to the oil. and this engine has been running 15w-40 oil all its life. 15w_40 is a diesel oil by the way.
Check the bellhousing area.
It may be loose / improperly installed flex plate / flywheel.
It may be the starter spacer plate is rubbing against the flex plate.
It may be the cat heat shield has broken welds.
well i dont have a cat it was taken off in the 90s, flex plate is still tight and has never been replaced, the sound is radiating from the heads or the pushrod cover area, my idea is that some of the valvetrain is work out after running on such a thick oil for 150,000 miles. i can try to get a video next week but i have a flowmaster so it will be hard to pick up the sound. the sound is something in between a knock and a tap, so i cant say its lifters but i will have to check the starter, its tight but could be an issue.
alright so an oil change did nothing, and the noise continued to get louder so i took my truck to a friend and me and him will tear into it friday. Right now sounds like a roofing crew pushing my truck
okay so when i hit the gas with my foot on the break the engine rises out of the compartment, my engine mounts are shot. my guess is that the ticking is an external rattle caused by the engine movement. im puting in a drivers side mount today ill let you know how it goes. its an expensive fix if it fixes the problem, 1986f150six may have been correct
A buddy that had a 69 Falcon with a 200-6 cylinder busted a motor mount. When he stepped on the gas, the engine jumped up, fan hit and cut the top radiator hose, bent the blades forward, and the spinning blades gutted his new radiator. Thank goodness that all you got was an annoying rattle!

for sure, i dont know for sure that this will fix it but i am willing to try. They needed to be replaced anyway because they are bad
Okay new problem, where can i find the rubber part of motor mounts for 78 F100 300 C6. The ones from oriellys make the motor lopsided enough to bind the linkage so it wont go out of park. LMC doesnt have the rubber part that i can see, i dont know where else, any ideas?
