Excursion Advice Wanted
I would be looking to keep the stock tire size. Upgrade suspension to stiffer springs like i have seen in the forum. Sway bars and that sort of thing. What axle code am i looking for for best towing. I mean not just torque. Most of towing is rolling down the road. Only what 15% is hill climb and yank out of your spot....
Yes stock tire im talking 16 inch rim im not looking to go fancy. By axle i was thinking axle code in my head but specifically i guess gear ratio would be what i was really getting at. I sawvsome guys say that the 4.3 gear ratio was optimal but they had different wheel sizes which changed geometry. Im talking standard wheel. F250 super duty spring upgrade and any other towing improvement. If thats what i am doing, should the 3.73 work or still look for the 4.3? I guess im trying to figure out what im looking for so i can try to find it.
Yes, as Mike has said, all of the 4X4 EXs have the same suspensions (with only slightly heavier front springs on the PSD rig as they are a bit heavier) so the same upgrades with pickup spring swaps work on both PSD and gasser EXs.
ALL PSD EXs came with 3.73 gears, as that is what works best to keep the diesels in their happy place while cruising. The V-10 rigs had a standard 3.73 gear with the option of 4.30, if you are building a gas tow pig you will want the 4.30s with stock sized tires.
On the door jamb sticker it will have the gear ratio shown under the "Axle" header (although some early EXs were missing this code....) 3.73 non-LS = "31", 3.73 LS = C1 and 4.30 LS = C3.
In my experience with the 6.8 the deeper gears helped in ALL towing situations. We made the same trip from/to Philly and Savannah while towing the old 9500lb TH with the stock 3.73 gears and again with the 4.88s installed. Both trips had the same 32" tires, same trailer and weight, same route, same speed etc.... This trip is about as flat of a long run as you will have here along the East Coast with only rolling hills in MD and VA. With the 3.73 we saw 6 to 7 MPG and several downshifts out of OD on those rolling hills, following the change to 4.88s (and no other changes) we got a solid 9 MPG and didn't downshift a single time while cruising on the Interstates. No big hills and no stop & go and it had much improved power application and a substantial bump in MPGs.
i’ve been looking around on the Internet here is the link to one that I found. https://www.texastruckseller.com/mob...x?vid=16423900
if you look at the pictures there is a door sticker, but it does not indicate the axle??!
Is $13k in your budget? If so, there are better trucks/prices out there than that.
What features are your must haves? 4x4? Leather? Cloth? Diesel or Gas?
I dunno. Im waiting on some tax money. Might be able to swing that. I was looking at vehicles under 15k to get an idea. Leather is a must. The more bells and whistles the better of course.
Really i want the best mechanical excursion i can find diesel or v10 for towing and hauling my travel trailer for the next 1-2 years. If there are better vehicles i would love to see them. If any members want to build me something thats within the budget im interested in hearing about it. https://houston.craigslist.org/cto/d...501702560.html

I prefer to deal with private owners all day every day. You will get more info on the vehicle, and you will have more bargaining power with a private seller.

or this one for 7500

talked with both. They will take 7500. I have not looked at them yet.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Do you work on your own vehicle? Have tools? Have you ever owned a diesel? Are you willing to put the effort and energy into learning all about that engine and its shortcomings that need to be addressed?
A 7.3L is a MUCH safer bet for a first time diesel owner. Very forgiving and easy to work on. The 6.uh-oh is not forgiving, and it is not easy to work on. The wheels on it have been changed to 18", so that guy is running spacers on it if he has a brain, but looking at the photos I ain't so sure. I noticed the spare is still a 16"...arm rest missing in second row...
In regards to the V-10:
It is 2wd. Can you live with that? For the miles and interior condition, that is a good price at $7500. You need to pull the history report on it, and really, really check the underside for rust. If there is any rust, re-evaluate.
