Just installed a new motor in my 79 dent. I have replaced everything but believe I am having trouble with the neutral safety switch. The truck will only start when shifted into neutral. When I put the switch back on I had a pin in it and bolted it in while shifted in neutral. Did I do this right or should the pin be set for park? Maybe the switch is bad but it worked fine before I pulled it so it must be user error. Thanks.
I think this the the way to adjust it?
1) Transmission in Neutral (chocked wheels)
2) Gear shift lever in Neutral
3) The switch with the holes lined up (use small drill bit to align it).
Once you have done all this......tighten the switch bolts up.
Without testing it I'm just guessing but it sounds like your switch is no good. I've replaced mine a few times. Don't think they are the most reliable switchs or maybe it's there location.
I too had a truck that would only start in neutral or you could push up on the column shifter to get it to start. Let a buddy borrow the truck for a weekend and he ended up adjusting it. Worked better, but sometimes you still had to play with it to start. I would have eventually replaced the switch if I kept the truck
Ok thanks everyone, the switch is literally the only none new part on the entire powertrain at this point so I am going to go with that. Thanks again everyone!
