I can see the one in the 2006 crew cab FX4 and I see lots of connections and wires so I would say it's electronic but the 2004 crew is buried in well over two feet of snow. Engine is 5.4 2 valve if that is any hint.

NOPE. If the engine is a 5.4L, it is a 3-valve engine. If it is a 4.6L, it is a 2-valve engine for 2004 model year. And if it is the 5.4L 3-valve engine it'll have a 4R75 transmission behind it, which really is a slightly beefed up 4R70W transmission.
Yes, The engine in the 2006 F150 FX4 crew is definately a 5.4 3 valve. The transmission has no tag anywhere but I have found the tag on the drivers post that I now see is demystified here onsite. Its the letter "Q" so mystery solved there...4R75E.
I will have to get out to the 2004 tomorrow again.
Well, got out to the 2004 F150 Crew today with it being -17 outside today . Thank you m-chan68. It is indeed a 4.6 although the air cleaner stuff is not original and says 5.4.
Trans code is "U". 4R70W ?
I also got a tarp and burrowed underneath to look. The 4x4 trans looks very close if not the same externally like mine in my 2006 but transfer case has a bent up aluminum metal tag that says it 4016..it looks identical to mine in every way in the 2006 but that says 4066?
The truck is not stock exhaust etc...so no history here.
The reality not is the engine and trans are not compatible with the computer in my 2006 with it being the 4R75E..so just looking for parts now that I can use. An extra transfer case cant hurt but I dunno whats up with that number. Thanks
