Random surgging stops is restart
Well my truck will randomly get a surge in the engine that is felt between 1500 RPM and 2000rpm, not a real bad buck but surging. I figured out if I pull off somewhere and shut the truck off and restart it, it disappears.
No codes.
Any idea what it may be. Been told could be my ICP, but I don’t see how it could be if I can restart the truck and it’s fine.
Does it in OD or if I have Tow/Haul on.
Any and all help would be appreciated.

I had a simular surge issue on my '05. I forget which but either the EOT or the ECT was reading below zero degrees F during the surging episode. Just for kicks check your temp gauges if you experience another surge.

My surge and stall was the icp connection, at the base of the connection is a grey clip , with engine running do a pinch wiggle test , and see if it surges .you also don’t want oil leaking at the icp/connection.

I know you don’t want the oil leakage into the connector at the ICP. I checked it and it’s dry as a bone, but I will go and give it another wiggle test to just be on the safe side

I found little white marks on the three wires after taking the clip off , those were shorts in the wiring , ended up replacing the pig tail, not hard to do , just pay attention wire for wire , I’ll try and post up a picture , may not be your issue but most common in our trucks

Hard to see the white spot my pen is pointing to , but when looking at the wire with out the photo , I can see better , very Visable.

I started up the truck and messed with the pigtail with no effect and did my best inspecting it. Afterwards took it for a drive and ran great. I may just replace the pig tail next week after paycheck hits.

Next question , does it seem to surge more hot , that’s when voltage has been drawn, or cold ? , if you have gauges OBD not dash, set to Ficm , cold first Koeo ( key on Engine off ) look at all Ficm readings , Lp,main and Vp you don’t want anything below 45v on main , nothing below 11v on Lp or Vp,

Well it does both cold and hot. I don’t have anything like scangauge at the moment. I plan to invest in one when I have the funds.
I had my code reader hooked up and it allows me to read SOME things on the truck. One was MVP or something similar and it read 13.5
On that note any recommendations on which Scangauge I should get cause it seems like the best bet for what I need.

No worries , just trying to get ya going , I use a scan Gauge II. From Auto Zone , you will need to enter the ford Pids witch I have and can be found on this site as well, the definition of surge can be confused by Stiction too , most Stiction issues are from the injectors and counter parts like low volts by Alternator, battery’s , low volts on the Ficm , surge or bucking , high / low rpms points to several things like Icp, ipr, VGT, Hpop Issues , having a Gauge helps narrow things off the list, yes there are better gauges to be had and would be a better code reader , I’m happy with what I have and learned to read it has saved me hundreds .will get it , the Crew here are Purdy good .

Well I will see about getting a scan gauge here soon so I can monitor it when it does happen. I may see about purchasing one tomorrow. Just have to see. I will keep

Well this far I know my FLP is 13.5, IPR Percentage at idle is 24.2, FICM voltage varies between 48 and 48.5, ICP at idle reads 582...
Any other pids I should program into the little magic black box?
I assume my best bet is to just flip threw them when an issue arises.
Any thoughts or test tonrun would be appreciated!!

Numbers look good to me, you did the Ficm cold yea? As the Ficm heats up you’ll see better numbers , ok so let’s go to filters Oem? Oil and fuel and last change out, last hfcm filter and water separates drain , hold a glass jar to catch the fluid then look at the amount of water in the jar, hfcm is under the drivers door on the rail , It’s a Allen key set up unless you installed the misimoto drain valve , fyi easier to drain with out stripping the Allen nut., do you use any fuel additive ?
Set in the gauge Icpv, (Injector control pressure volts), they will move so don’t be alarmed, what you don’t want when surging is like a monkey in a gorilla cage or in some people’s cases too many Red Bull’s in a hours time, those should bounce easy not fluctuate all over the place here’s the ford specs
Icpv- it takes .85v to start - Koeo-0.2 , low-1.0 high -1.8 operating values 0.15-4.7
All these test are done in park , no HVAC,no radio,with no fan no load , road tests will show different numbers plus it’s dangerous to do so.
