With my prior truck I would often turn off the engine while going through the car wash. But I didn't shut off the engine until I knew the rollers had engaged the rear wheel. And yes, I would run the wipers at certain times. I figure that it helps to clean both sides of the wipers as well as the bottom of the windshield.
With my F-350 and 6.7L I just leave the engine running.
The first time I ran my Nissan Leaf through the same car wash I couldn't figure out how to shift into neutral. That was embarrassing. It's easy to do once you know how but it's not obvious. Definitely an RTFM moment.
