Ford Escape AC

Has anyone used the Red Tec brand of AC Freon that is suppose to be a direct replacement for the 134a. I had to replace my condenser in my 2010 Escape because of a accident and the system is now completely empty. I was looking at this as easy fix that I could do myself. Anybody have any knowledge of this product?

Never heard of it (until I Googled it). Why would you want to screw around with a hydrocarbon as a refrigerant anyway? Stuff's illegal to use in motor vehicles in many places.

I can buy a 12 oz can of R134a at my local Walmart for about $5. System only takes 25 oz.

Well it’s not illegal to use in the US or in Canada. The reason I wanted to use it is because it comes in a kit so I don’t need anything extra to put it into my system. In Canada I need a licence to buy 134a and then I would need all of the gauges and vacuum pump to install it. I can’t go out to my local Walmart and buy it. Red Tec is made so that anybody can put it in, and it’s not a ozone depleting substance, nor is it harmful if you breath it in. I can go to a shop and have my system filled. It will cost me about $190 plus the cost of Freon. Red Tec would only cost me $80 total. Like most in today’s economy, I’m trying to be cost efficient. If I wasn’t I’d be driving a new vehicle and wouldn’t have to worry about asking a forum for information.

It is indeed illegal in the US abut not in Canada. The company's marketing messaging on their website, at best, is disingenuous.

You should have indicated you're in Canada in the first place, that would have simplified things.

Good luck, don't blow yourself up screwing with that stuff, it's simply a mix of butane and propene ( a close relative of propane).
