Ive got a 1989 Ford Ranger. its got a little 4 banger in it. If I buy a stock intake maifold and a stock TB, do a port and polish on the maifold and open the TB up more, would I notice a gain???
Not unless you swap cam and/or port the head to take advantage of it. This alone will do nothing noticeable, maybe (I mean MAYBE) 2-3 hp on the upper end on a dyno. Not enough to tell a difference while driving.
Take this to heart, and don't hate me for writing it. If you are hell bent on keeping the 4 banger and seeing what you can get out of it then go for it but as mentioned you may want to look into cam/head work. Otherwise if you are just wanting to pep it up until you get something with more hp then don't spend a dime on it, save everything you get your hands on and put a v-8 or a blown or modified 4.0 at the very least, v-8 swaps are not that expensive with a bit of research. I know this is not what you asked and please don't take it for more than I wrote just trying to save you some money and potential disappointment. Final note don't misunderstand I think a beefed up 4 banger would be great, just not for myself. Good luck and hope it turns out how you want it too.
On your question 90f150moneypit has the answer. Dont expect any noticable gain. It would actually hurt a stock engine by having too much air and not being able to use it properly. I would have to agree with jwtaylor. If you want performance go with a V8. Money better spent. On a tight budget. Jut think all the money you could save from driving a 4 banger around instead of modifing parts and being disapointed. In the long run performance wise, "There is no replacement for displacement".
Like was said, it probably wouldn't help much. If you wanted to, you might extract a little more performance by porting the cylinder heads. You can do this yourself, and it'd help more than any intake / TB work you did. Also, crane makes a cam for it, see here. IMO, the cam and head work would give the most performance out of your 4 cylinder.
After that, THEN look at the TB / intake work.
Oh yeah, is it a manual or automatic transmission? That will help determine which cam you should get. With a manual, you can get a little more agressive on the cam because you dont have a torque convertor to deal with.
