just picked up my 18 last week: my top three must have's would be:
- Rapid Heat (only with the 6.7L)
- Extended running boards, lets you reach into the bed. Cost about same as retractable but I don't need the clearance, not off roading.
- Long bed, nice to have a 48 gallon tank
If you tow fifth wheel, then add the fifth wheel prep and bed camera to the list.
I picked the options I wanted on a Lariat, LED's would have been nice but would have cost me about $4800 more with the packages that you are required to get, in order to get the LED (BLIS + LED + Lariat Ultimate). I skipped the LED. With the dual mirrors on each side, you have very little blind spot next to the truck. I can see BLIS being more useful on a single mirror system like cars have.
No moon roof for me, all my vehicles have them and no one uses them in my family, and none of my friends use the ones they have.
Yes I agree about the 48 gal tank. My current vehicle a 2011 f250 6.7 came with a 25gal stock. It would pass everything but a gas station while towing before I swapped it for an aftermarket 55 gal tank. Is the rapid heat gonna warm you up or just take the chill out?
Is the rapid heat gonna warm you up or just take the chill out?
The Rapid Heat is 1500 watt element in your heat duct. Think about your Wifes Hair Blower. It's 1500 watts. So it's not going to warm up a big Crew Cab.
I don't remember the exact parameters. But Outside temps need to be below something like 40°F and the Coolant below 80° F for it to turn on. It remains on till the coolant exceeds 100°, For me, on a 20° morning, my coolant hits 100° in about 8 blocks of driving.
So the Rapid Heat Supplimental Heater is only on for a few minutes. (Good thing, since most single alternator trucks put out 200 Amps and the rapid heat sucks 125 amps) If you also have headlights on, fan blower, Seat heaters you would drain your batteries if it stayed on constantly. The new trucks (17-18) seem to include dual alternators to address this.
So what does it do? It's great at getting your windows defrosted when you remote start your truck. I punch the button and when I come out 5 minutes later the frost is off the windshield.
It helps to get chill out the cab. But it definitely does not get it warm
If you live in a cold climate, It is well worth the couple hundred dollars Ford charges. Just don't expect it to do miracles.
... I do like the Adaptive Cruise now that I've used it and learned about it. The BLIS I could probably live without if all I was using it for was changing lanes. But it is handy when backing out of driveways or parking lot spaces. The lane keep is a small distraction to me. But maybe it will help teach me to always use my turn signals. I've gotten a little casual about just drifting across lanes without signalling if nobody is near....
Question relating to the BLIS option: I'm thinking that these trucks have a back-up camera. If so, when backing up, doesn't it show you a wide enough angle to see cross traffic coming? We have a 2014 Honda Accord with an OEM back up camera. When backing up, that camera view is so wide angle that you can see any cross traffic coming in plenty of time to stop. If these trucks have a similar wide angle back up camera, personally, I wouldn't buy the BLIS option, as for lane changing, I'm fine with the blind spot mirrors.
Good evening all! Quick question for you. I am planning to order a new 450 this spring. For those of you who own a 2017 and up, what options / features have you felt to be worth the money?
I bought a F-350 DRW Lariat almost a year ago. 2 options I wish I had were the tailgate step and the factory fifth wheel prep. Bought it to tow our fifth wheel trailer and it certainly has been great doing that. Make sure to get the dealer to get some Gatorback or some other quality mud flaps for front and rear. The OEM hood shields from Ford look good too but is also a dealer option. Factory spray in liner is a good option also.
I just placed my order for a 2018 F250 Lariat CC 4x4 SB diesel
I had a GMC previously so I compared to that.
Ford seems to have a more advanced set of technology than GMC. Some may not like that, but for me, it was a deciding factor.
I particularly like the adaptive cruise control. We have it on my wife's Acura and I love it.
You must get Lariat Ultimate in order to get adaptive cruise. Here's what I ordered:
Lariat Ultimate
Tow Technology package
BLIS
Adaptive Cruise
Universal Garage door opener.
3.31 locking rear axle
Extended running boards
I am a strong believer in TPMS when towing, so I looked into the Ford Trailer TPMS and Trailer camera. It is a wired system and would be a job to install.
I have existing TST TPMS from my current setup, so I will use that. I bought a wireless trailer back up camera.

Good call on the mud flaps, I didn’t even consider that. I feel your pain on the step, in my younger years it was an easy hop, bow my knees and back just laugh at me when I think about doing it. Thanks for tour insight!
1) LED lights: they just make everything so much brighter
2) Ruby Red-Two tone: just sets it apart
3)Extended Running boards: just make it easier to gt into the toolbox and hitch a GN trailer
4)ADaptive Cruise Control: just make long drives easier
5) Tow Tech bundle: it's just cool
6)upfitter switches the cost is negligible, but not having them is a PITA

I agree on the utility of TPMS in the trailer tires. But I disagree on the install. It was pretty easy as long as you don't mind drilling a couple of small holes in the trailer frame.

Does the tire pressure readout in the cluster? How has the reliability been with that system? Can you use it on triple axels (6) tires?

Yes, the trailer tires PSI is displayed in the cluster. It is on a separate screen from the truck's tires. It would be nice to see them both on one screen but I can live with it. Mine has been flawless in the past year that I've used it. It can be used on triple axle, but from the factory only comes with sensors for two axles. Your parts department will sell you two more sensors.
