I recently picked up what the seller told me was an ‘79 F100 stepside F100. He thought it had a 360 or 390 but he wasn’t sure.
i’m doing a frame off restomod. The VIN on the title indicates it’s a 1979 F150 FWD with a 351. However, it has a ‘77 or earlier grill and round headlights. During the tear down, I noticed that the front clip and bed (short box) were originally green, while the cab was a dark blue color. Once I got the cab off, the VIN stamped on the frame indicates it’s a ‘76 F100 4WD, which indicates the motor should be a 360.
So where does this leave me? Can I reasonably restore this on the frame I have? I have since taken off the cab so tomorrow I can post pics of the frame and motor, hoping someone tell me if this is a 360 or 351C.
I am not sure of your concerns with the frame. If you have a title that matches a VIN on the truck, you are ok. If you have concerns about the frame being from a stolen truck, you should be able to have motor vehicle do a vin search.
I agree it looks to be a FE family motor, but to verify, there are numbers on the block to help narrow it down some.
From what you have said and what I see, I would plan on buying most parts for the 76.
Not sure on other states... but in Virginia and North Carolina, generally speaking, the VIN/Title go based of the Frame stamping. As the tag on the door isn't a true "VIN" tag but a warranty tag. Anyone could swap a driver's door w/ the warranty tag that matches their Title, and claim it true, until found otherwise on the frame. I know a lot of times "legally" or "technically" if vehicle requires a frame replacement, there are processes in place to have the new frame stamped by the respective State DMV so to indicate, it goes w/ the vehicle.
Yes, was concerned that I was potentially dealing with a stolen truck
Here’s the best pics of the motor I can take at night
That is definitely a FE. As for which one, I'm not the greatest with casting numbers, but the intake has a 69 Casting being C9AE from a car. The 360 and 390 share the same block, but different stroke. So hard to tell exactly which one w/o measuring stroke or getting the numbers off the crank.
You have to measure the stroke to see which engine you have.
Run the frame and cab numbers (if they are different) through the cops and see if it's stolen. Did you match either serial on the title to the truck?
So, based on this thread Ford V8 Engine Identification - FORDification.com, it looks like a 360 (or 390), since I have a 5 bolt pattern on the valve covers. I'll be rebuilding the engine, so it'll be interesting to see what I have there.
The options tag inside the driver's side door is damaged so I am not able to read the VIN there. But the VIN on the title matches the style of the cab ('79 F150), while to the VIN stamped into the frame matches the rest of the truck.

As a note, all FE's share the same valve cover bolt pattern. the only way to truly know which you have, is by measuring stroke and bore.
As for the cab, 73-79 share the same cab design. I am still assuming though the frame VIN you found, does not match the VIN on your title?? If it is of concern, you may contact your DMV to see what reconciliation can be done.
There is a possibility your truck had a lien on the title and was never paid off. Somehow a 1979 title was acquired and the door vin was destroyed, and the 1979 title used to sell the truck.
My guess is that is what happened, or the truck is stolen and the 1979 title was used in the same way described above. Everything points to that truck being a 1976, except the title.
What vin number in inside the windshield on the dash?
79 f 150. vin locations are as follows : drivers door , drivers b pillar, right side frame rail aprox 14 inches back from radiator core support and final is top frame rail passenger side just past first body mount. they never had a dash tag
