MY steering is slightly wandering at low speed and slightly dangerous at freeway speeds. I have adjusted the gearbox which is only slightly used. I bought it and and installed it only a few years ago and haven't driven the truck enough to wear it. I know I need to change the tie-rod ends. I looked on the internet and saw a six piece set. I need to know how to go about changing out the parts correctly. Also,I saw another set with eight pieces. Mine seems to be the same as the six piece set.
I would like all the information and helpful hints out there.
Thanks in advance. I am also going to do the brakes.
Well that makes it a lot easier.
You want to get the new tie rod ends installed as close to the location of the old ones as possible to try to maintain your alignment.
It's not quite as simple as counting turns to remove the old and install the new as the replacements may be a bit longer or shorter than the old ones and obviously just a couple of threads will throw that count off.
Measure from the center of the socket joint in the tire rod end to the edge of the tie rid housing. Or alternatively drop the entire tie rod and measure from socket joint center to socket joint center. Do not measure from far end to far end as casting differences will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
It's a good time to check/replace pivot bushing and radius arm bushings as well.
When finished take it to your alignment shop or fine tune it yourself. Pretty easy as toe is the only adjustment needed on a twin I-beam. (Excluding extreme exceptions.)
