I recently received a truck that I thought had a 460 in it. It doesn't. What happened is my cousin bought the truck off of a guy and drove it for a while and traded it to my dad for something. Well my dad gave it to me since he bought my brother a car. The truck is a 76 f-250 highboy 4x4. The guy who sold it to my cousin told him that it was a 460. Well I bought some plugs and wires and other tune-up stuff for a 76 460 and the plugs were different. So I was looking around on the vin # and the truck came stock with a 360 in it. Someone has done something to this truck because it has an automatic transmission and the wrong transfer case on it. The transmission has something wrong with it like stretched linkage or something and leaks bad. In order to put the truck in 4wd right now you have to crawl under the truck and engage the transfer case from underneath. I believe the truck might even have a 390 in it. 360 and 390 have the same plugs but the 360 has a 2barrel and the 390 a 4barrel. It is late and I haven't checked yet but I think the truck has a 4 on it. So unless someone put a 4 on the 360 it might be 390. I am confused. And a little mad I wanted the 460. What are your thoughts? Thank you
Is your transfer case driven by a separate drive shaft off the back of the tranny, or is it bolted to the tranny ?
( if it is bolted up, then someone changed it, or maybe you have a 150 with 250 badges on it ( i have seen people change them ) if this truck has a regular cab and front leaf springs, instead of coils, it should be a 250.
in that case it should have a remote mounted transfer case, a frame that stays the same width from the front of the truck all the way to the back, and a gas tank in the cab. and..... 390's came with 2 barrel carbs also......not a bad motor, but not a 460, and not inter-changeable as far as (auto)tranny, motor mounts, exhaust, etc....
There could be a multitude of things done or not done in the swap. One area I would concentrate my concerns on is the driveshafts and yokes. You'd be surprised how these things are overlooked in a swap. Many of the older driveshafts have adjustible yokes. Something simple you could do to possibly relieve some stress on the drivetrain would be to loosen the U-joint "U-bolts" at the front and read ends to check the length. If they are adjusted wrong, or they are the wrong length, the rear end yokes will have abnormal wear at the u-joint junction. Be sure to block the vehicle because if the driveshafts have been "stretched" to fit, the vehicle will roll when you remove the U-bolts. Also check the differentials (pumpkins) to see if they are leaking and where it might be, possibly at the pinion seal. I'm not real well-versed in 4WD, but these are some simple starting points.
7 bolts = 429/460 ( Don't let that confuse you, the 429 and 460 are the same motor different stroke, different crank.)
Somebody has definetly made some changes to this truck. Start looking for casting numbers and such.
The rear is probably still a Dana 60, the front should be a Dana 44. The transfer case could be a multitude of things. Please post the shift sequence. I assume its a NP205 since you said something about getting into 4wd, the NP203 was a full time 4x4 case.
If your tranny is an automatic its most definetly a C6, 3 speed non Overdrive bullet proof. Good luck, and welcome to FTE.
well i am wondering if it is a 460 after all... I bought 460 plugs for it and they were autolite 25's but the truck needed autolite 45's which came in 360's and 390's????? So I am confused. I know I need to get casting numbers but I haven't had the time to clean the motor and find them. It is definitely not full time 4wd and the auto tranny is leaking really bad and hard to get in gear. So I will probably be getting a 4 speed and new transfer case for it soon. The transfer case is barely hanging under the truck so i will go ahead and get a new one. Any suggestions on what motor it is would be greatly appreciated thanks
I have determined that it is a 460 th plugs are like this//// and there are seven bolts on the valve cover. but once i got it started up there was a nice knocking noise in the motor that was not there when the truck was originally parked.I think it is just a lifter which would be alright because i will be replacing the lifters when i change the cam. I plan on taking the motor out of the truck and going through it. What all do you all recommend?
