My truck is a '78 F150, 400/C6/2.75 rear end.
I've been running an autolite 4100 for several years and have put roughly 60,000 miles on that carb. Unfortunately the throttle shafts have worn to the point that they are causing drivability and fuel economy issues. I have a spare 4100 that I picked up a while back, but after swapping everything over I have found that it isn't much better.
I'm starting to think I should stop fooling with 50+ year old carburetors and just buy a new one. I was looking at an attractively priced 600 cfm holley on summit the other day, but I know there are other options out there. I would like to stick with something that uses holley jets though, as I have built up quite a collection of those.
I'm just looking for input and experiences in general, my truck is daily driven and sees around 15,000 miles a year, with some occasional cross country trips thrown into the mix.
This conversation can go like “what is the best driver for Golf”. There are so many choice to suite your particular situation and the real answer is "The one that makes you feel the best about your game". So I’ll jump in, but I will explain why I made my choice. I drive a '77 F150, 400/C6/3.5 2wd. I chose a Street Demon 625 with a polymer body. Why? I have headers and pull a travel trailer. The heat was an issue causing vapor lock. The polymer carb body helps with this issue. Also the carb has access to the metering rods and springs without removing the carb. I have an Air/Fuel ratio gauge and vacuum gauge so I wanted to fine tune the carb easily. As I said there are a lot of choices. If you want to stay fairly close to the Auto lite 4100 a 600CFM Holley 4 barrel might be the answer. I hope this helps.
You could rebuild. There is a throttle shaft rebuild kit for the motorcraft/autolite carb. it's been awhile since I have looked into it though (Pony Carb?). I also need to make the repair. 4100 is a good carb.

Jon Enyeart (sp?) passed away a few years ago and the brand/company was bought up by Champion Carburetor... Not sure if the new owners kept Jon's crew or whether the quality and attention to detail has been maintained.

A remanned 4100 (1.12 venturi at 600 cfm) is $330.
FYI....a 1.08 venturi is 480 cfm.
Ideally I would like to continue running an autolite 4100, I really like the simplicity and the reliability. I will have to give those guys a call, I had done some limited research on having the throttle shafts redone and hadn't found much.
In the meantime, I found a pretty recently reman'd holley 1850 on one of my parts trucks... Maybe I'll clean it up and give it a try.
