I have a 302 motor in my 56 F100. The current carb does not work very well, Carter AFB. It idles rough, stumbles around, etc. I have no idea of the model number because I haven't been able to find it. There are no tags on the carb. I am considering getting a 600 cfm Edelbrock Performer carb.
Does anyone have experience with the Edelbrock? Will the linkage work?
The edelbrock carbs are the same thing as the carter, if your unhappy with the carter than most likely you will be unhappy with the edelbrock. I have had good luck with Holley carbs. Depending on your engine and tranny, I would suggest either a 600 CFM 4160 or 4150 carb. The 4160 has vacuum secondaries which would be good for an automatic tranny. The 4150 is more for performance and has mechanical secondaries and dual fuel feeds. Theres also the new holley street avenger carbs, ive never used one but I hear they are really good.

there's a question missing here... you say the current carb doesn't work well ??? what you describe sounds like poor adjustment, leaks, sticking.. maybe a rebuild or cleaning would fix it... have you tried carb cleaner down the throat ?? ..
before I'd jump to a Holley... I'd try working on the carter or switching to Edlebrock... My gurus tell me that Holleys are a good racing/performance carb, but the Carters and Edlebrocks are a better choice for daily drivers with partial throttle activity being the rule...
sorry 1956f100 ... ifn' it were me....I wouldn't jump ship till I knew the old one wasn't salvageable...
I had a friend who is knowledgeable about carbs look at it. He recommending a replacment after we tried to adjust the carb for over an hour. He says there are some internal leaks, possibly a warped body that would require a major rebuild. In the long run he felt it would be cheaper to pick up a new one.
I don't want to have the truck off the road too long if I can help it.
I have a Carter AFB 625cfm carb on my 302 w/ AOD tranny. My carb was doing things exactly like yours was (based on your description). All mine needed was an accelerator pump ($15). Works fine ever since.
