Just planning and pricing at this point. Planning on using one of these adaptors. Ford FE Transmission Adapters . They said the kit will work with any small block pattern bell ZF transmission. Also planning on putting a ZF transmission park brake and disk swappping the rear axel.
Dont actually have a ZF in hand yet. So anythings possible. Just trying to get it all figured out before I start deflating my bank account. I poked around the archives but didnt see any examples with pictures of a clutch master mounted in one of these cabs.
If you already have a 4spd, I would just use an NV4500 and the Advance Adapters adapter plate. Then you just use the factory bellhousing, linkage, flywheel and pressureplate for the FE
Ah the curse of reverse! Had one in a 02? Dodge work truck with a early 24 valve cummins. Only thing I liked about that transmission is you could no clutch it pretty easy. It had the screwed up reverse problem those get so you had to always park it in a drive through spot. If you really had to use reverse the truck had to be rolling to get it in and rolling to get it out.
I love my ZF5. When mounting it to the firewall, you must figure out some bracing method. Lots of people just sandwich the firewall with some metal and bolt it up. Whatever is the easiest for you or your mechanic to install.

If you had a 02, you would have had the NV5600. Those things always seem to have a hard time
shifting.
I have always had great luck with the NV4500 though, and would recommend it.
If you do the ZF5 though and need a master cylinder for the clutch, you could mount it to the frame. That is what I had to do when I swapped my FE for a cummins. I needed a hydraulic clutch for the Dodge Cummins bellhousing. I made a bracket off the frame that connected to the linkage coming out of the bottom of the cab and then connected to the master. It took a bit of time to figure out the correct swing, but does work pretty good now
PEB is putting a 4BT in a 150, he has a SLICK bellcrank setup that mounts to the framerail, factory rod through the floor. Probably would work on a bump, too......
Personally like ZF's, I like the way they shift better, and they seem to hold up just as good, especially behind a gasser - the only place I wasn't too happy with one was behind another guy's Cummins conversion I got to help with, nasty gear rollover noise - but I believe that one is right at 200,000 post-swap, and still rumbling away.......
