Was mudding just a little bit ago and attempted to put my 95 into lowrange. I can get it in high just fine, but I cant put it in neutral or low. I tried pushing down and pulling back but its just not working. I even resorted to loking at the manual as Ive never encountered this problem on my 86. Any suggestions? I have manual lockouts and lever shift with an automatic tranny
There is a post elsewhere that talks about an adjustment to the linkage which can cure the problem. My lever does the exact same thing and I am going to have it looked at before the snow flies. I know what you mean because it just plain does not MOVE!! I banged my knuckles 2X because in trying to move it over and down the damn shifter head came off.
Try putting the trans in neutral before moving it. In my truck I have to push the clutch in (even when it isn't running) to get into, and especially out of, 4 low.
I love the old style T-cases, yank the lever and there it is.
If you have an auto, try going from drive to reverse a couple times with the brake on while pulling on the lever. You may also need to put it in drive, bump the gas to get moving (slow creep), shift back to neutral and then pull the lever. If you don't use low range very often, things can gum up and not work properly.
If you have a clutch, try gently letting the clutch out while pulling on the lever, either in first or reverse. This will help line up the gears so things will mesh properly. If you suddenly hear a grind while working the clutch, you're probably headed in the right direction.
Just used my 4x4 today on a dirt road and still cannot get the 4LO to engage. A tranny shop I was at a while back said it was a pretty simple matter to adjust the linkage and get the lever to move. Anyone reading this does not need to reply about whether or not I'm in neutral (it's a 5 spd.) or having the clutch in, or whether I know if I'm in 4 wheel drive or anything else relating to simple procedure outlined in the manual. This is my 3rd Bronco and I've never had this particular problem with the manual transfer case and will let you know how the linkage adjustment works since no one seems familiar with it. I tried slipping in reverse and 1st and it will NOT move from anywhere beyond 4Hi.
Let me know if you get it fixed!!! Thanks buddy. (91 5.0 5spd)
