I know, lots of threads already on this. I have no idea what the previous owner used and he probably doesn't either so there's no point in trying to contact him to inquire.
All i know is on my 900 mile drive home from purchase i used zero oil. Since i have tried MC 5w-20 and it drank >1qt/1000 miles and Penz Platinum 5w-30 and usage is less but still looks like 1qt/1500. No towing, just a mix of 70/30 interstate/town driving
what do I try next? I suppose MC 5w-30 is logical, any other recommendations? And reason to not try a M1 0w-40 eventually maybe? Pressure on dash looks good on everything I have tried so far so that's good I suppose.
I'm assuming a V-10 as those sound like the common oil consumption numbers for a seasoned 6.8 motor. If so, I would stick with a 5W-30 that is either semi or full synthetic, brand is up to you, I buy the cheap Mobil 1 at Walmart along with the $3.99-ish MC FL-820S filter (use NO OTHER filter on the V-10! ).
Just add to top off as needed between changes, I shoot for 3,000 mile oil changes on mine with nearly all the miles towing heavy and typically see about a quart down by then.
did PCV and hose a few weeks back, used a MC PCV valve and not aftermarket. no change in oil usage, hence why I am thinking it might be flavor of oil. I have had other vehicles in the past that couldn't get enough of one brand and another was just fine.
I might just go with MC 5w-30 next time, and if that doesn't work M1 0W-40. i would prefer to run a full synthetic though
