My boss also has a 2000 7.3. it had 135000 on it. Stock truck with a service body, automatic transmission. He's trying to figure out what other things he should do to it when the engine is pulled next year for an oil pan replacement to avoid the cost of pulling it again in the near future. He also would like to know if he should go through and rebuild or upgrade the transmission as well. We don't really have a Powerstroke "specialist" near here as far as we know. Any pointer would be much appreciated. Thanks.
I had a C-6 rebuilt a few months ago while I was going through a 1978 F-100 I bought to partially restore. While I was at the tranny shop (good shop, trust the owner), he said typically those 4R100s see about 150-200K before needing a rebuild. My 1999 F350 SD is on it's second 4R100, which was replaced at just under 60K right before I bought it by a dealer in Panama City, FL. I only drive my F350 7-8K per year so wouldn't rebuild unless I was having problems, especially since they cost much more than a C-6 to do so. Whether or not your boss should rebuild depends on his usage, how critical the truck is if it did break down, and his budget while the engine is out. I did have to drop my tranny back in '08 for a front seal leak. I had access to a lift so it wasn't too bad and took only half a day. Of course Ford tried to sell me a new transmission at over $3K at the time. I got a second opinion thankfully, and I'm still on the same tranny even after two heavy moves across country, countless camping trips, etc.
Got it. This is for the same truck. I was digging around today and found oil residue all over under the compressor side of the turbo. Is this where you would see oil from a pedestal leak? Also, is it possible to leak where the inlet of the turbo meets the air intake tube? I also think the CCV on his truck may have a leak but that's easy enough to fix. I'll clean it up good and check it after it runs to be sure but was curious if these leaks are possible from where I think they are.
