The highest avertised rating for the EFI460 was 245@4,000,but I've heard stories that Ford gave them more power in '96&'97,but didn't bother to change the rating.I think it was more like 275-280.A 295-325 horsepower EFI460 would've been nice to produce for it's last year.I have a '94 which carries the 245 rating...well it used to. It makes much more than that now! If only the E4OD behind it would've held up....
Oops,I forgot the Superdutys got a 255 horsepower EFI460.If it was due to a different cam,it might have been #M-6250-T460.It was offered in the 1993 Motorsports catalog. It's specs were:260/272 degree duration intake/exhaust and valve lift was .487"/.518".At .050 it was 204/216 degrees duration intake/exhaust.They even offered a "460 EFI TRUCK PERFORMANCE IMPROVMENT KIT"(#M-9000-T100) in the '93 catalog. It included the cam, lifters, valve springs&retainers, pushrods, and a 180 degree thermostat. My guess is the 255 horsepower vs.245 horsepower 460 was due to a better exhaust system, however. The stripped chassis/motorhomes got the 255 version, also.I remember seeing some with a large single tailpipe rather than the twin "splitter" pipes other EFI460s got. My other guess is the EFI460's 1994 power increase to 245 vs.230 was due to the Motorsport camshaft being used in them. Why?! In 1994, Motorsport no longer offered this cam....they called it "A must for serious truckers!""It has been designed to increase torque&horsepower while using your production electronics..." Since most EFI460s use Speed Density electronics(MAP sensor)....this might explain it.
It's not hard to generate 300hp out of a 460, with the right mods and money. Heads and a cam alone should do it.
Bank's PowerPack system claims gains for the 460 of 68 hp and 94 lb-ft and their Stinger system of 40 hp and 50 lb-ft. I dont believe either of these systems involves internal engine mods, but appear to be intake, exhaust, and possibly chips. The PowerPack includes headers and will get you over 300 hp. Also fuel savings. See BanksPower.com
Everything I've read about the EFI 460 is, the intake and exhaust severely limit how well it performs. But there is no real way to get serious power with the batch fired injectors on the pre-'96 motors. Banks makes their power from opening up the intake and exhaust. I dont have that kind of money so I ordered an 3.5" race muffler and exhaust pipe. It sounds awesome and helped it really respond better.
