I went ahead updated iPhones and got 2 new 8s. One will plug in and work just fine. That one is for my son. I plug mine in it says iPhone detected but then does nothing. So frustrating. I went through setting no clue what’s wrong.
My IPhone 7 is doing the same thing. Connects via Bluetooth, but when plugged in via usb it does nothing and cannot be found by truck. It has worked perfectly in the past, as recently as last week. I suspect it’s something in Apple’s latest update.
I’m on 11.2.5 beta. Mine recognizes that my phone is plugged in as far as charging goes, just not as a music device. Mobile apps like FordPass and Pandora don’t work either. No huge loss on FordPass as it doesn’t really do anything anyway.
I just loaded up a ton of music from my iTunes onto a new flash drive and leave it plugged in all the time. Works great and it loads immediately when I fire the truck up.
I've about given up on using Car Play altogether. Pandora plays over bluetooth and like you, I've got hundreds of songs on a thumb drive sitting in a USB slot. In fact, IIRC the Car Play doesn't identify the name of the song playing from USB while the Sync media player does. Or maybe it's the other way round...

I had an issue where I had linked my phone with my truck via bluetooth & would also use CarPlay from time to time. I discovered that I had all sort of issues with CarPlay will bluetooth was also linked.
I have sense unpaired my bluetooth & just use CarPlay, and everything works with CarPlay.
It sounds like from your message that you have both too, so I wanted to tell you about my experience.
So I don't have a Super Duty, but, I think they started putting SYNC 3 in some of these newer 2017's. At least the Lariats or XLT's with upgrades.
(But I have 2016 F-150 with SYNC 3)
If you have SYNC 3 then you probably need to update the SYNC 3 OS.
Go to owner.ford.com. Sign in or register.
IF the SYNC 3 version is too old, it might not work over wi-fi.
Google updating SYNC 3 via USB, and they should offer you a download image you can use to update sync via a USB stick.
This helped me out a lot with stability and phone compatibility, etc.
Also make sure your Siri features are enabled on your Iphones. A lot of SYNC 3 requires Siri to be enabled.
In my case I finally figured it out. Because I’ve had a iPad and 3 phones. It had to go into the CarPlay setting and enable the phone I was trying to use. No clue why you’d plug in a phone you didn’t want to use seems like a useless option
There is also a setting in your Iphone in the restrictions area of settings, make sure car play is enabled. This caused me some problems when I first got my truck.
