I own a 2001 Ranger Edge Supercab. Its the step-side and a 4X4 with an aftermarket moon roof. There is about 30,000 miles on it. Yesterday there was alot of rain and I was driving with some friends. This morning I needed to run out and I found that the front left(Drivers Side) Suspension is squeaking on every bump and speed bump. When I got home I tried squeaking it in park with the ignition off. The truck still squeaked in the same spot. I am new to Fords and I do not know to much about the Ranger. What could be wrong?
I have the identical problem with my 2.5L XLT (2WD). The noise started up shortly after a good washing, so I don't know if the water spray had anything to do with it or not. Anyway, I've narrowed mine down to the upper passenger-side wheel well and I'm guessing that it is the upper ball joint. Hard to believe a ball joint would be ready for replacement after 47,000 miles! They are sealed ball joints and I'm going to try to replace them with Moog parts that can be lubed.
I'm not looking forward to having to replace the upper ball joints/upper control arms already (according to Haynes, the upper ball joints are not press-out on the 2001 XLT, so the entire control arm has to go).
I don't know if the Edge package had the same suspension as the XLT, but I do know that the SLA suspension with McPherson struts was relatively new to the Ranger line in 2001.
Keep us updated, I'd like to see how your front end issue comes out.
Hey fellas, I had the same problem turned out to be a simple fix ! I let a little syenthetic oil drizzle on the Upper control arm bushing, I did the lower one with Liguid rench . I can't take the credit a friend of mine told me to try it and it did it.
I rocked the 2001 4.0 4x4 up and down untill I thought that I was going to vapor lock ...while doing this the noise was gone and I have not heard it again .
Could be balljoints, they're actually known for making noises with relatively low miles. Another part to check is the sway bar bushing and endlinks. They sometimes like to make noise and are easy/cheap to replace.
