I have a 91 f250 with the 302 Windsor, the odometer has been broken since I bough it so I cannot say how many miles it has.
The basic problem is that after shifting into 2nd 3rd and fourth I have a knocking sound coming from under the hood accompanied by what I think is engine misfiring. It lurches and chugs with little power like its struggling to keep accelerating. The knocking and lurching only occur at the low rpm end of each gear and clears up midway through the respective gear all the way until it is time to change into the next highest gear at which point it returns.
After some research my guess is that the spark plugs need replacing as well as the plug wires, ( they look relatively new, I haven't replaced them in the few years Ive owned the truck so I cant say how old they are) And perhaps a new distributor cap?
I haven't had to work on this sort of issue yet so I wanted to get some opinions before I just jump in replacing parts that may not be leading to the problem. Thanks a lot!
if you haven't replaced the plugs, wires, cap AND rotor in the "few years" that you have owned it, then i would do so and HOPE that it cures the problem. if it doesn't then my next moves would be 1) pull codes 2) test fuel pressure with a gauge 3) check timing 4) check for vacuum leaks.
Put new plugs in and plug wires, looks like problem has been solved! If it comes back Ill update this thread with any additional steps I take just in case someone else comes looking for the same thing in years to come and stumbles across this.
