I have a 1980 Fullsize Bronco with a 351 M engine.
Well I have some sort of ignition problem. My truck starts fine at first until it's run for a bit. The once I shut it off and try to restart it it won't start. I'm getting fuel and the odd thing is sometime have spark and sometimes not. But when I have spark it starts and shuts off right away. Sometimes it starts and then runs rough. It even stalled when driving it.
I replaced the ignition switch, cap and rotor, tried another coil, tried my spare ignition module cleaned all my connections, and tried another battery.
Now the stupid thing runs perfectly.
I just finished replacing the stator in the distributor. One thing I noticed was that it was seized and wouldn't move freely, so I don't think the vacuum advance was working correctly. I had to tap it with a screwdriver and hammer to get it out. I don't know it that was the cause, being seized, but when the truck shut itself off before it blew the hose off the front of the carburetor that goes to the PVC valve.
Time will tell if I've solved it or not.
Anyone have this problem before? I hope I have it solved.
I did almost the exact same, it would start fine, but even then sometimes it would start @ 1500 for like 5 secs then drop to a VERY rough 500-700 and then stall, or if it was hot it wouldnt start back up all the time.
It was my CTS, replaced that any everything was great.
It's possible for a pickup in the distributor to cause what you're seeing. If you're sure all the wiring is good, and you're sure your spare module is good, the next thing to take a look at is the pickup in the distributor. This requires total disassembly of the distributor.
I'm with lars915 on this one. The pickup in the dist sends a tach pulse to the ignition module. No pulse = no spark. My '84 would start and run when cold. If you shut it off when it was hot it would not go until it cooled completely. There was a hairline crack in the tach pulse sender.
Very frustrating problem for sure. It only just got worse to the point where she wouldn't start until cool. Last year on the highway it was if she shut off and then came back to life. About 15 mins after that she stalled at a set of lights and wouldn't start for about 10 mins. And this year it got progressively worse.
She seems to be running good so far and even starts better.
Im surprised, had the same problem with my 84 and I changed the module and the coil and havnt had the same problem since, knock on wood. Snow should be here soon so well see how long itl last
