220 grit paper in a small roll works great. I've also used something like this to do the same.

Well I fixed the running light. Sort of. After cleaning the connectors the light still didn't work. As an experiment, I ran a new wire from the connector to the tail light connector and it worked. The gray wire is broken somewhere in the pigtail but since it would require unwrapping all that tape, I'm going to call this one fixed.
