Hollander Interchange Manuals
Hollander Interchange Manuals
Morning everybody,
I am thinking about buying a Hollander Interchange Manual for my 1961 F250 4x4. Can anyone explain how these manuals work? For 4th generation F-Series, does it give part numbers that are interchangeable between years? I was looking at a used 31st edition which seems like it would cover 4th generation trucks, but I'll have to buy the book in order to see what's between the covers. I'd rather not spend $75 if it's not what I need.
Also, if I buy a later version of the book, for instance, one that would go through 1979, will it also reference parts for interchange all the way back to 1961? The reason I ask is because I want to do a front disc brake conversion on my 61 F250 4X4 and no one seems to make the parts for it. I've been told to look for a 1979 F250 4X4 to swap out front axles, but I'd like to make sure they are compatible.
Thanks!

I don't have a Hollander Manual but I do have an Auto Interchange Systems 63-74 manual. It does have some truck info in it but it is very limited. It gives part numbers of parts that are the same or will work with some modification. I doubt that any interchange manual will tell you what you need to know. I got my manual 30 years ago and it was great for junk yard shopping then. Not so much anymore because all those vehicles were crushed years ago.
Many large libraries will still have the original paper manuals. You might be able to actually look at and read the various books and determine which is best for you. However, the Hollander isn't a good source for help with modifications or upgrades. It describes parts that are identical to the original or very close to it, and will often write "auto wreckers say xxxxx will fit." The Hollander doesn't speculate or make suggestions.
I think the best place for the information you seek is right here.

As 6t6merc said, the Hollander manuals give a direct interchange, or a "can be made to work by...". Hollander's deal with the "big pieces" that a wrecking yard would typically deal with. They will address a power steering gear, not the internal parts of the gear. They do not address non factory installs, such as a power steering swap or a disc brake conversion. Hollander assigns a "Hollander number" to a part. This number is constant through different editions of the manual.
Hollander manuals span a set number of years. The manuals I have typically cover about 10 years, sometimes a bit more. I don't think you will find one manual that covers both '61 and '79 model years.
On some pieces Hollander does give dimensions and / or descriptions and in some instances it gives factory part numbers and casting number identification. This can be helpful in identifying parts and pieces.
I have used Hollander's in my shop for 40 years and never once regretted having them as a reference source.
