Just got a bunch of stuff done to my 05 6.0. Who could have guessed that an egr and heads would go on my truck?
I was also lucky enough to have both heads crack! 😂.
05 6.0
jasper cylinder heads
arp head studs
sinister Total diesel solution kit w/ BP EGR
NO TUNE
New egr valve
140,000miles
Anyway got the truck back and it is blowing black smoke out the exaust. Low speeds isn’t bad but 55 mph cruise produces constant flow of pretty heavy “coal”. It doesn’t have a tune and had the egr valve replaced during work. Had injectors pulled and cleaned/inspected, and also is producing no codes.. could this be an injector putting too much fuel in the system? If so how could I identify which one...
is this just how it runs with open pipe egr? Not confirmed but possible loss in MPG as well...
i tested Tested the ficm and it’s producing 48v so that’s good, what about the y pipe? I don’t hear a super loud whistle in the cab driving but maybe abnormal sounds? Could that cause black smoke?
I would get 4 cans of Seafoam. Put two in the oil and 2 in the fuel. I do this about 500 miles before an oil change and every third tank of fuel. I have been doing this since 2005 when I got my X. Never had an injector or turbo problem. Only time I get black smoke is when get on my Atlas 80 FICM tune.
You are going to get a lot negative replies about not doing this. It is your call. A lot of injector repair shops use Seafoam to clean injectors and a 50/50 mixture to flow test injectors. Call them and ask.
I think black smoke is more a sign of insufficient combustion due to lack of oxygen. Not that it couldn't be overfueling.
id look at the EGR valve - is it OEM? Another member had a non-OEM valve due weird things to boost levels. I'd also make sure your charge air and exhaust circuits are tight. Does the sinister kit do anything with the intake side to the turbo?
Do you have a good code (and pending code) reader?
Who did the work? Sounds like they missed something or screwed something up if it was like this when you got it back. I'd be on their doorstep right away.
I don't have a code reader that can read pending codes, any recommendations on code readers?
I will pull the egr valve and look at it, but it is OEM.. also I will inspect the hot side of Charge pipes, I replaced the cold side because it had a crack right in the middle of that 90 downturn..
I can rule out the shop screwing this job up... they have done this hundreds of times and their guys have been to ford school. I understand people make mistakes, but I'm ruling that out.
Even experts can make mistakes. I'm sure they make fewer mistakes after doing this work 100s of times, but they still happen. There are tasks i do at work that i have done 100s of times. Every now and then, I'll make a little mistake. It's human nature.
If your symptoms are that noticeable, i would have one of them go for a ridealong. Anything more than a small wisp of black smoke on sudden hard acceleration when stock tuned is too much. Smoke while just cruising is NOT normal, even if tuned. Since you just spent a good chunk of money with them, I'm pretty sure they can help you out with the issue you're having, especially if it is something like a loose piece of hardware or a sensor left unplugged, which is what i suspect.
If you just got the truck back and it’s doing that, you need to take it right back to them and have them fix the issue. Doesn’t matter what it is, if they were that deep into it then it has to be something they did wrong or overlooked when putting it back together. Didn’t they test drive it?
I let the fuel tank run until it was almost empty, filled it half way and put injector cleaner into her, and no smoke at all! not flooring it, not idling, or cruising at 55.... completely gone..... im hoping this was just a case of some bad fuel..... fingers are crossed.
@mhatlen acceleration and boost are completely normal. even when smoke was blowing.. im hoping just a little crud was in an injector, or bad fuel.
Have them check the tin foil sections of the Y pipe, or if they got it together right when they put it back together. They could have cracked when the put it back together. When mine cracked it started smoking because it wasn't producing enough boost for the fuel. I was also getting exhaust fumes in the cab while sitting.
