So I am looking to buy a 2012 F-250 6.2 4x4 xl crew cab short bed with 21k miles. The check engine light is on and I was wondering what it could possibly be with that low of miles. Truck is currently owned by an older woman (70+). I do plan on taking it to my mechanic before I buy it. I was just wondering if anyone had any insight on it.... could it have just sat too much??
Hard to say without the codes. When your mechanic checks it out, let us know what codes he pulls up. That will definitely help. BTW: You may have run across a good deal.
1) If you have a code reader, bring it along. If not, get one. They are relatively inexpensive. They can be purchased pretty much any auto parts store, tool store and in between. Don't want to spend the money? See if a friend has one. Borrow his or hers. I am not going to cover a Mechanic since you stated you will be visiting one.
2) Historically speaking this forum has not many DTC issues. The engines seem to be pretty darn dependable. So what you will find might be related to a charging system based (low battery voltage trip) but it could be something in effect of an emissions code like plugged cats. It happened to one of our members on the forum. However, I am going to reiterate, we will not be able to help you until there are some codes.
Good luck and please let us know what you find out. 12K milles truck only a couple of years old sounds like a great deal if it is something simple like a battery or even just a maintenance related thing like fluid change.
It could be anything from a gas cap left loose to the wiring getting chewed by a rodents because it set in one place too long, to bad gas, like everyone else already said. With that low of milage I would look it over very good for leaking seals, chewed wiring and rodent nests. Milage that low on a vehicle that old may not be a good thing. If a vehicle sets too much it can be more detrimental than high freeway miles depending on how it was stored and how the miles were put on. Good luck with your purchase and I hope all goes well.

I will hopefully have some codes for you here on Monday, I appreciate all of your responses/advice. She is a friend of a friend, daughter and son in law are in the same profession as i am, they seem pretty honest. She had records of all the oil changes, I am guessing most of the mileage was put on in between 2012 and 2015, as her husband passed away. but she drives it once a week for about 20-30 miles. so hopefully it is nothing to serious, but i will let you all know, again thanks for your responses, i am not very mechanically inclined so bear with me.
I didn’t get the exact code but it was an emissions code which was determined to be a gas cap fault (not completely secured). Other than that he said it looked clean and good to go. Guess I’ll be joining the 6.2 family this Monday.

Do it! There're are very few problems with this engine that should keep you from buying a 6.2 (<former 6.7 owner).

Gas caps I had that happen a couple of times with the Explorer. Good luck with the sale and hopefully the new ride.
well got the truck on Tuesday and looks like my evap code is back P0453. I have looked all over the internet for the fuel tank pressure sensor and couldn't find any information on it or its location, and of course one of the local dealers said the sensor is not covered under the 8/80k emissions warranty (just my luck lol). Other than that I love the truck hopefully have the new wheels and tires ordered next week, along with fixing this sensor....
there are a few things that could cause a 453 code, two of them being a bad gas cap, or a bug in one of the evaporative emissions lines.
it took me 2 1/2 months to find the spider web/dirt clogging the line on the 07 mercury milan my niece left sit not moved or started for 2 years.
Alright put the new gas cap on today before I went to work, my brother in law is going to reset it later today and drive it around to see if it comes back on or not. Here's to hoping this fixes everything!
