OK, I'll be perfectly honest, I have never owned a Ford with an automatic transmission. Can't find a diagram for the 2 piece driveline in my 1978 f-350 flatbed dump with the long wheel base. I know when you pull the yoke out of a GM product the tranny fluid comes with it. any help?
Your Ford is the same. What you probably have is a u-joint flange that is attached by a nut or flange to the end of the trans main shaft. This shaft will go to a carrier bearing attached to the frame with a u joint on the rear with a slip yoke on it. Yours will be the bottom pic.
Thanks Guy's,
Pulled the drive shaft this weekend, pretty sure this has never been done to this truck. Had to cut the bolts off that hold the carrier bearing & the clips on the U joint caps came out in pieces & couldn't press out the joints with a 12" vise. Time for some heat & a hydraulic press.
Not sure which side of the mountains your on, but if you can get your driveline to Drivelines NW in Everett they can get you fixed up. Ive used them twice now and I highly recommend them. The can do balancing too which can save headaches down the road.
Curious... does that center support bearing just slide off the shaft? Does it typically need a little influence of a rubber mallet? I will likely be replacing mine in the near future.
NumberDummy: Does that rubber insulator in the above diagram (part no. 4826) still exist?

Comes with the driveshaft center support kit: D9TZ-4800-A (replaced D4TZ-4800-A and the individual parts used prior years) / Recently obsoleted, but available NOS & from auto parts stores.
That is cool. Grew up in Vancouver & have worked in Woodland most of my life & looking forward to retire this year. Then I will be in your area since we have property on Guemes Island.
It's done, but what a bi#@H. Had to use the 20 ton press at work to push everything apart & at one point didn't think that was going too work. Everything went back together fine after cleaning all the rust, dirt & grease. The bad; I still have a small vibration. Hopefully didn't harm the driveline from having to put so much pressure on it. Will inspect this evening if it's not pouring rain.
