well today i heard a snap form the rear and thought it may be the u joint and it is. i took it apart and found one of the needle bearings broke in about 12 pieces. are the u joints press in? i assume so. also my truck uses a 2 piece driveshaft and one end slips over the other shaft coming out of the carrier bearing inside of it is a cork gasket cut the same as the grooves on the shaft. where could i get a new one and what is it called.
The U-joints are pressed into the drive shafts ears. There are 2 outter snap rings holding the bearing cups in. If you remove the snap rings, you can press the bearing cups out in a bench vise using a small socket ON the cup, and on the other side a socket large enough to catch the other cup. Push the U-joint out far enough to grab the cup with some vise grips, then push it out the other way and repeat if the U-joint will not come out now. New U-joint goes in the opposite way: Cup, joint, cup, snap rings.
Good luck

Take your drive shaft to a driveline shop and have it balanced with new u-joints installed. It is cheaper to do that around here than to install them yourself and then have it balanced. Every 2-piece shaft I have ever worked on required balancing later. Get a new carrier bearing while you are at it.
If you can have the driveline angles checked also. There is an article in my home page links section on driveline angles to read.
