Steering wheel controls

My controls for the stereo are acting up. I can try and turn the volume up and it will change the station, I can try and turn the volume down and it will turn it up. Sometimes it acts fine. Wondering if it just needs cleaned. Any one had to fix their controls? 2005 350 KR. I do have an aftermarket head unit....does that have anything to do with it?

The various buttons each have a different resistance to allow the system to differentiate what function is being pushed. perhaps you have dirty contacts or a bad connection in the wiring causing the resistance to be off which causes the wrong funtion to occur?

I was kind of thinking the same thing with it needing a cleaning. Guess I need to figure out how to remove it and start from there.

Sounds more like the clock spring is going bad. Does it appear to happen when the steering wheel in a certain position or all positions?

Had the clock spring go bad on my 2015. Some positions as i turned the wheel would cause the radio to jump up and down and skip around the selected radio stations as i tried to use the up and down radio arrow button.

I seem to only use the controls when I'm driving straight ahead, so that's the only time I notice it. It doesn't do anything on it own, only when I touch the controls.

You said you have an aftermarket head unit. Which product was used to adapt the steering wheel controls to the head unit? PAC audio makes a kit, and I believe Scosche does as well.

I don't recall anything in there. I remember wiring it per the instructions. I may pull the HU and look.
