I just finished changing my hub seal on my driver side rear wheel. Now I cant get the hub back on, the seal just wont slide over the spindle, tryed pounding it with a 4lbs hammer, pushing with my foot, but it just wont go. Anyone else have this problem. Also the spindle is grooved where the old seal was
There is a tool to drive those seals in without destroying them. Search out the ball joint replacement threads and you will see the necessary steps to R and I those seals.
You install the seal in the hub. 05Super is correct in that you can use a block of wood to get the seal in the hub. However, you may have the wrong seal. There are 2 wheel seal diameters for the spindles that have the 2.250" inner wheel bearing. The seal surface is one of 2 possibilities. 2.875" and 2.955" If your truck is an F350, you MIGHT have an inner bearing of 2.500". If that's the case, you need a wheel seal with a 3.250" diameter where it goes on the spindle. If you're trying to slip the seal on the spindle to see if it's the right one, with a little oil, it should go on with little effort. And, be sure to put oil in the hub before you slide the outer bearing on the spindle.
