i apologize for the semi-hijack, but while the flareside guys are around...what is this square stock piece? I have one, but it kinda fell off during transport/unloading.
Any Idea what this was used for? There is only one on a bed, near fuel filler hose, yet nothing to do with the fuel system. possible '70's style spare tire rack foundation?
Why would Ford "spend" the money/time/material installing something with no use?
Thanks

Since I see next to no red paint on it, it may have been installed by a previous owner (it's not pictured in the parts catalog).
The exact same piece is installed on my truck, and I've seen pictures of others on here. Definitely installed by Ford, but for what...who knows. Perhaps it was intended to be used as some kind of mount or support for the fuel filler hose/cavity, but then was never used? With the fender installed, the filler cavity is almost sitting right on top of this piece, but not quite touching it.
Yeah, its on all the beds, but serves no purpose.
The Flareside mystery continues...
Too bad no one here was an assembler in a Ford plant putting these things together.
Its installed "through the wood" with 3 carriage style round-head bolts.

Yeah, two bolts through the bedside flange, and a 3rd through the wood a little further in, correct? That's the way mine is, and I've seen a few pictures of others like that.
It really is an odd little piece.
I wonder if it has anything to do with a specific assembly plant. Were the Flareside trucks built at all of the plants, or just a couple, or just one? Mine was built in Ontario, Canada.
